SOUP !!  IT’S NOT JUST ON MONDAYS !!

Have you wanted to join in eating soup at the Club, but Mondays are not your day?  Then do I have some news for you!  Beginning on

                             WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK, 11^TH JUNE

.

Wednesdays are also soup day.  Many thanks to Kari, soup and homemade bread will be available from around 11.45 onwards for the cost of an activity voucher.  (Cash or voucher welcome.)  The soup is served from the kitchen adjacent to Hall 1, and seating is available in the verandah area.  We have a supply of containers so people can buy any leftover soup (if there is any!) to take home for the same price.

Thanks to those who have already offered to help.  Please talk to Sue Allen or to me if you would like to make a soup occasionally on Mondays – or Wednesdays .

OUR CARPARK SAGA

Just to bring you up to date with the matter of keeping our carpark free of illegal parkers – the fourth person to ignore our signs and also the warning attached to their vehicle has had said vehicle towed away.  Thanks to Ron and Sue for their early morning surveillance, we are all enjoying the ease of parking these days.

AN IMPORTANT  SAFETY REMINDER

.

Luckily, an incident requiring evacuation of the Club is not a common occurrence.  There are however a range of possible such incidents ranging from minor to serious, and it is imperative that, until proven otherwise, we assume that if the alarm is activated it is serious. 

.

The evacuation diagram below is displayed in all the public areas of the Club but we are all guilty of rarely if ever actually studying it and taking in the details.

    The good news – only one more *#$%&* Public Holiday Monday between now and Christmas.

BOOK FAIR DONATIONS

The Book Fair people are back at work and awaiting donations. 

We accept clean, resaleable books, jigsaws, CDs, DVDs, and board games. We are particularly interested in recent books, i.e. published in the last ten years.

We cannot accept Readers’ Digest condensed books, encyclopedias, magazines, First Aid manuals, textbooks, dirty, tatty books, vinyl records, and cassette tapes.

CAN YOU HELP?

Led by the enthusiasm and skill of one of our members (thanks Kari!!),  the Club is becoming a cleaner, brighter place to be and for all of us to enjoy.

Next project on the list is to clean the leather cushions in the sitting room.  A mini working bee is called for here, so if you are willing and available, we’d love to have some extra hands on Monday 26 May starting at 9.00am.  We have the materials for cleaning and would welcome a few people to help with the application.

Do you write or would you like to write creative short stories, poems, journals or even a novel?

Come along to our Creative Writing Group starting on Tuesday 27^th May, 11.00am to 12.30pm for support and encouragement in our writing endeavours.

Cleaning Poem

I asked the Lord to tell me

Why my house is such a mess

He asked if I’d been ‘computering’,

And I had to answer ‘yes.’

He told me to get off my butt,

And tidy up the house.

And so I started cleaning up…

The smudges off my mouse.

I wiped and shined the topside.

That really did the trick…

I was just admiring my good work.

I didn’t mean to ‘click.’

But click, I did, and oops – I found

A real absorbing site

That I got SO way into it –

I was into it all night.

 So nothing’s changed except my mouse.

It’s as shiny as the sun.

I guess my house will stay a mess…..

While I sit here on my bum.

Since the introduction of the new MyWay+ ticketing system in November 2024, ACT Seniors Card holders have been able to show bus drivers or customer service officers their card to travel for free on public transport. This was an initiative of Transport Canberra to allow seniors extra time to obtain a MyWay+ travel card. This initiative is coming to an end in June and seniors will be required to obtain a MyWay+ ticket or set up an account to travel.  There are several ways for this to be done by using your ACT Seniors Card to obtain a concessional fare:

1.Obtaining a physical MyWay+ card at a MyWay+ retail agent. You show the retail agent your ACT Seniors Card, advise what concession you are entitled to (60-69 or 70+) and request a physical card. Using this option does not require the set up of a MyWay+ account on a device and you can simply tap on and off as you travel anonymously. You can see a list of the current retail agents below or visit the Transport Canberra websitefor one near you. 2.Purchasing a printed ticket.  This can be done at a ticket vending machine at a bus station or at light rail stops. Over 70’s will be required to pay a fare using this option as there is no option for a free ticket. 3.Use a Mastercard or Visa. This will not allow you to travel with the ACT Seniors Card concession unless you link it to a MyWay+ account. 4.Set up an MyWay+ account and link your ACT Seniors Card. While this may sound complicated, Transport Canberra have committed to helping ACT Seniors Card holders set up their accounts in person by attending the COTA ACT outreach service at ACT Libraries in May. The locations and dates are as follows:-

• TUGGERANONG LIBRARY – 15 MAY, 10AM-12PM • WODEN LIBRARY – 22 MAY, 10AM-12PM

Transport Canberra can also provide assistance setting up accounts over the phone by calling 6207 7711 or you can visit their website to see their detailed tutorial videos.

HYGIENE REMINDER

Most of our groups have a break for a cuppa or for a full-on morning or afternoon tea and this is a big part of what makes our Club such a special place.  Just a reminder please to wipe down the table/s afterwards to help us keep everyone healthy and safe.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS

A very pleasant afternoon tea function was held to thank and celebrate the volunteers who put in so much effort to make our 2025 Big Book Fair such a success.  Thanks to Hindmarsh Bellerive Retirement Village we had a really nice gift hamper to give away and it was decided that each attendee would receive a lucky number ticket and there would be a draw to win it.  To the delight of everyone in attendance, Judy Henderson had the winning ticket.  Congratulations to Judy and our thanks for being an extraordinary leader.

DRAINAGE RECTIFICATION WORKS ON CORINNA STREET

As previously advised, work will commence in coming weeks to rectify the drains in the raised pavement on Corinna Street between Furzer and Keltie Streets.

Variable Message Boards are now being installed providing early notification to all road users. 

.

Next week commencing on the 12^th of May, some construction fencing and a small site compound will be established in the laneway on the Melrose Drive side of the library crossing. This will include construction signage, with a QR code which links the public to the website, informing them of the upcoming works.

.

The following week, commencing on the 19^th of May, actual demolition and construction of stage 1 will commence on the Melrose Dr side of Corinna Street.

.

Overall this is going to mean that from day to day there will be variations regarding which roads are going to allow access to the Club.  The Variable Message Boards will be used to advise of changes as they occur .  We have been advised that access to the Club will remain during the work but  we will need to take extra care and follow the traffic signs.

FEE INCREASE

To help keep pace with increasing costs – which affect Woden Seniors in the same way as any other organisation – your Committee has decided that there will be small increase in our activity fees.

.

From 1^st July this year, the fee schedule will reflect a $1.00 increase per activity, so the new fees will be

.

.

We will of course print new vouchers to use from 1 July. 

HOWEVER – if you have unused $7.50, $6 or $4 vouchers at 1 July, Polly will stamp them with the Club stamp to indicate that they are now $8.50, $7.00 or $5.00 vouchers – for the bargain price of $1.00 per stamp.  You can, of course, also simply use your old vouchers and add $1.00 cash.

MOTHERS’ DAY AFTERNOON TEA

FRIDAY 9^TH MAY at 3.00pm.

Members are invited to an afternoon of social enjoyment and afternoon tea on the Friday afternoon before Mothers’ Day.

We will take advantage of the occasion to draw the winners of our current raffle.

BOOK FAIR

Once again, thanks to the organisers and workers we have pulled off a very successful Book Fair!!

.

  

.

Below from Judy Henderson, Book Fair Co-ordinator:

 We held our tenth BIG Book Fair on the weekend of 4, 5 and 6 April.  It was a great success which raised over $35,000 for the Club.

.

The success of such an event depends on the support of a large number of members. The whole Club, as a self-funded organisation, benefits from the Book Fair. Its proceeds keep the activity fee low and contribute to every area of Club expenditure – building maintenance, heating and cooling, cleaning, insurance…and no end of general expenses.

.

Special thanks go to:

.

During the last year we continued to reach out to the community, resulting in many benefits for those concerned. We assisted the Toora women’s refuges with donations of activity books for children. We donated some boxes of left over children’s books to a literacy project in New Guinea, Buk Bilong Pikanini. We donated left over books to Roundabout. We donated regularly to the Hughes Community Centre Book Exchange as well as street libraries.

The Book Fair Committee will be having a review meeting in the coming weeks so think about how you would like to be more involved or anything that would help to make the 2026 Book Fair even better and let us know. We are always looking for new volunteers, who can bring new ideas. Some of us are retiring, so we desperately need some younger people to take it on if the Book Fair is to continue.

PARKING

The efficacy of our new regime is obvious as you drive in to the Club and there are parking spots for all.

For now we are continuing to monitor the vehicles parked and it will help the volunteers doing this work if members can display their parking permits.  This will save the legs of the volunteers and save Polly’s time checking the membership database.  If you don’t have or have lost your permit card, Polly will be happy to provide you with a new one!!

BOOK FAIR

Can you help?

.

The Book Fair is only a week away. We are calling for volunteers to help set up and pack up. We do not need any more people during the Book Fair – volunteers have already been allocated for this time from the teams who have worked during the year on the organisation and preparation.

.

Setting up

Setting up will be on Thursday 3 April. It will commence at 10.30 am in Hall 1 and 12.30 pm in Hall 2 and the Anne Murray Room.

If you are available to help set up, even for a short time, please put your name down on the sheet at the office.

.

Packing up

Packing up will be from 4 pm on Sunday 6 April. Those involved over the three days of the Book Fair are always exhausted by this time, so some fresh helpers are very welcome. Hopefully with many hands it will only take about an hour and a half.

.

Parking for volunteers

Special areas in the car park will be set aside for volunteers. On arrival, please tell the parking attendant that you are a volunteer and whether you are staying for the whole day or part day. You will then be assigned to the relevant area.

.

Happy hour – advance notice

This year Happy Hour will be longer i.e. from 12 noon to 4 pm on Sunday 6 April. Everything will be half price or $5.00 a box for those wanting lots. So spread the word.

.

OUTDOOR IMPROVEMENTS

Thanks to our Facilities and Garden team there have been some welcome improvements outside the Club building. 

.

                      

The flowers and veggies in the pod are really enjoying the Indian Summer conditions and two refurbished garden areas are adding to the overall amenity.

.

And the biggest improvement of all – our carpark with ample spaces for members attending activities at the Club.

Many thanks to Ron and Sue who have done most of the research and organisation and doing the legwork leading to this most welcome scene.

ADVANCE NOTICE

We have been given advance notice, as below, of stormwater repair works which are to be carried out in Corinna Street.

The project manager is aware of the dates for our Book Fair and has assured us that the work will not commence until late April and will therefore not affect the Fair.  However, as a reading of the notice below will certainly indicate, there is some disruption to come.  We are also assured that access to the Club will be maintained, but please do be aware that there will may be temporary changes – mainly stop/go controls and one way sections – which will mean members will need to be aware that it may be necessary to change their usual route into the carpark.

How many dogs does it take to change a light globe?

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out globe?
Border Collie: Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to regs.
Dachshund: You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!
Rottweiler: Make me.
Lab: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light globe! Can I? Can I?  Huh? Huh? Can I?
Jack Russell Terrier: I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.
Poodle: I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the
time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Doberman Pinscher: While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch.
Irish Setter: Huh?
Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Greyhound: It isn’t moving. Who cares?

BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair is just three weeks away!

We have closed off receiving donations for this year’s Fair and will open up again on 1 May.

We will need lots of helpers to set up on Thursday 3 April and to pack up on Sunday 6 April. Please think about this and watch out for more details of times and how to sign up in the next Fortnightly News.

In the meantime, take some posters and/or bookmarks to distribute. There is a good supply of these at Polly’s counter. Posters can be put up on poster silos in shopping centres, on supermarket notice boards eg many IGAs have noticeboards and are happy to oblige, on church noticeboards and other community noticeboards, in libraries (just ask) and so on.

Our Book Fair is the Club’s big fund-raising effort for the year. 

Pick up some posters from Polly and help spread the word to family, friends, neighbours and to the wider community.

OUR PARKING PROBLEM

Our new regime for control of unauthorised parking at the Club, as outlined in our Newsletter of 28 February, is almost ready to roll out………………..

             We very much do not want to cause a problem for members when this gets under way.

 .

SO…. IT WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT THAT

1.  MEMBERS ENSURE THAT THEIR MEMBERSHIP AND PARKING STATUS ARE CURRENT, AND

2.  THAT THE INFORMATION REGARDING THEIR NUMBER PLATE DETAILS HELD IS CORRECT.

      

Polly can check this for you immediately if you aren’t sure!!

.

For the first couple of weeks, we will be focussing on putting the “first and only” warning notices on the vehicles which are parked in the very early part of the day, well before members start arriving for activities.  These vehicles are the ones which cause us most problems and hopefully the possibility or actuality of being towed away will quickly result in a big change to the space in our carpark.

.

If you occasionally come to the Club in a different car – no problem.  Simply ask Polly to add that car’s number plate to your membership info.   People dropping off members to the Club (partner, friend, carer, Uber…) are of course welcome and permitted to drive into the carpark as are people bringing books or otherwise visiting the Club for any reason.

.

It will be very helpful to the volunteer ‘spotters’ if you display your Club parking permit when parking at the Club.  If you have lost yours or don’t have one for any reason, Polly will be happy to provide you with a new one.

.

If by some chance you receive a warning notice in error, please just take it to Polly and she will check that your details and car rego are correctly listed and ensure that no further action is taken.

.

Note that there is no cost to the Club for the service – the tow operator charges the owners as and when a vehicle is towed.

.

If you have any questions, concerns or issues now or in the future about any of this, PLEASE do get in touch with me (contact details in the Newsletter).  The whole purpose of the exercise is to ensure that members are able access a parking space at their own Club, it’s only the freeloaders we want to target!

Woden Seniors BIG Bookfair is on again on Friday 4 April, Saturday 5 April and Sunday 6 April from 10 am to 4 pm daily at Woden Seniors Club 12 Corinna St Phillip (opposite the Woden Library).

In addition to thousands of books for all ages and tastes there will be CDs, DVDs, jigsaws, and games and a good selection of stunning water colour paintings.

OUR PARKING PROBLEM

Members will be all too aware of the problem we have been experiencing – over a very long period – of unauthorised persons helping themselves to our parking spaces.

We are hoping that the plan we are about to put into operation will be solution we have been looking for.

.

In the next week or two, signs will be placed at the entry points to the Club parking area to the effect that it is now a towaway zone.  Vehicles which our Club volunteer spotters identify as unauthorised will in the first instance have a warning notice attached to their vehicle.  If the vehicle is observed in our carpark again, we will ask the towaway operator to remove it.  Once this has happened it is then a matter between the vehicle owner and the tow company to arrange for its return – which will be at a very considerable cost to the owner.

             We very much do not want to cause a problem for members when this gets under way.

As you know, we have a database of members’ number plates which is linked to their membership details.  We can immediately identify any vehicle which belongs to a member who has paid for parking along with their membership.

 .

SO…. IT WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT THAT

1.  MEMBERS ENSURE THAT THEIR MEMBERSHIP AND PARKING STATUS ARE CURRENT, AND

2.  THAT THE INFORMATION REGARDING THEIR NUMBER PLATE DETAILS HELD IS CORRECT.

If you occasionally come to the Club in a different car – no problem.  Simply ask Polly to add that car’s number plate to your membership info.   People dropping off members to the Club (partner, friend, carer, Uber…) are of course welcome and permitted to drive into the carpark as are people bringing books or otherwise visiting the Club for any reason.

.

will also be very helpful to the abovementioned volunteer ‘spotters’ if you display your Club parking permit when parking at the Club.  If you have lost yours or don’t have one for any reason, Polly will be happy to provide you with a new one.

.

If by some chance you receive a warning notice in error, please just take it to Polly and she will check that your details and car rego are correctly listed to ensure that no further action is taken.

.

Note that there is no cost to the Club for the service – the tow operator charges the owners as and when a vehicle is towed.

.

CARD MAKING ACTIVITY

This is a new Club activity – the card making group meets on Thursdays from 12.30 to 2.30pm and beginners are very welcome.  Look what some of our beginners have done already!!

IN CASE OF BATS….

.

One of our members recently had a little bat land in her house, and really didn’t know what to do for it. She found the following information to help anyone else who might have the same thing happen.

.

“Hello .. I’m a bat…. I don’t suck blood and I don’t want to get stuck in your hair.  If I accidentally walk into your house, please don’t hit me with sticks or brooms, it really hurts and I’m very scared.  It was an accident, I didn’t mean to scare you.  If I land, I may not be able to get up and I need your help.  Just use a towel to get me out and I’ll fly right away.  I promise.  I eat mosquitoes and many other insects.  Our houses are being demolished for other buildings and we only have a few places to shelter.  So, if I fly into your house, turn off the lights, leave the outside light on and leave the door open.  I’ll be out in a heartbeat.  Be a human, I want to live too.”

Do you know these people?

Thanks to the generosity of Canberrans and the even wider community, the Club receives a continuous stream of donations of books for us to sell at the Book Fair.  Quite obviously some of these have been part of a family’s downsizing process. This week the hard-working book processing team found, in one such box, a wedding album and many other obviously family photos. 

.

It’s fairly certain that these were inadvertently put in a box with other books.  If you know or know of the people in the pictures, please let Polly know so that we can offer to return them.

Book Fair Donations

Whilst on the matter of donations for the Book Fair, we will close off receipt of donations on FRIDAY 14^TH MARCH.   As you can imagine, the task of preparing for a massive effort over the three days of the Fair is a big one.  We need our volunteers to have the time and energy for those preparations without also trying to keep up with the cleaning, sorting and storing of new donations.

If you have been planning to bring in any clean, resaleable books, comics, CDs, DVDs, audio books, jigsaws, and games we’ll be delighted to receive them up until Friday 14 March!

Members of our craft group, led by Maureen Bourne, are planning offer instruction in card-making.  If there is interest, the sessions will begin in late February, on Thursdays from 12.30 to 2.30pm.

Beginners are welcome.  Some supplies are included in the usual Club activity fee.
