Book Group idea

We now have left only seven brand new copies of ‘The Happiness Jar’ by Canberra based author Samantha Tidy.  This book was the winner of ACT Writing and Publishing Award in 2014. If your book group is looking for an idea for the next book to discuss why not suggest it. Copies are $2.50 each and available from Polly.

.

PLEASE HELP TO KEEP THE CLUB SAFE AND CLEAN

.

You may have spotted a couple of new signs at the Club – as below!

.

For safety reasons it is vital that the verandah doors opening out into the carpark are kept clear of chairs and other obstacles.

For health reasons it would be really appreciated if members do not leave unwashed cups, plates and cutlery on the sinks in the kitchen, Anne Murray room and Hall 2.  The washing up fairy will thank you!!

SCAM WARNINGS

.

The news media are never shy about reminding us that phone and computer scams are more and more commonplace, and that seniors are the most vulnerable group.  Do remember –if you feel that you aren’t sure of what you are doing in this space, COTA ACT offers individual one-on-one training sessions through its GET IT program where senior Canberrans can come and ask questions in a relaxed way and learn about how to get online and become confident with using technology.  Their offices are at the Hughes Community Centre, 2 Wisdom Street, Hughes, 6282 3777 or email contact@cotaact.org.au.

WELCOME BACK…

…in 2024 to a new year at Woden Seniors.  I hope everyone has survived the bumps and pitfalls of the Christmas and New Year period – and in fact found some peace and enjoyment along the way.

.

If you haven’t made and already abandoned your New Year resolution for 2024, how about resolving to try a new activity from the many on offer at the Club?  A good way to make some new friends and maybe acquire some new skills!

  .

THE WODEN SENIORS 2024 BOOK FAIR

Our ninth Book Fair is fast approaching. It will be just after Easter, i.e. on 5, 6 and 7 April.

The Book Fair team has been beavering away for the last nine months processing donations three times a week, storing them, and putting in place plans for the Club’s best book fair so far.

At the time of the Book Fair, we will need additional help. So, think about how you would like to contribute.

We will need lots of helpers to set up on Thursday 4 April and to pack up on Sunday 7 April.

We will only need a small number of extra helpers during the Book Fair to refill the tables, work on the checkout and keep everything tidy and safe.

Closer to the time a sign-up sheet will be available at the front counter. Watch this space for more details.

Another way to help is to encourage friends and family to come and support the Book Fair. Pick up some bookmarks to give them so they have the dates.

Thanks Ron for today’s drivel department contribution:

Common sense is like deodorant.  The people who need it the most never use it.
It’s not my age that bothers me; it’s the side effects.
I’m not saying I’m old and worn out, but I make sure I’m nowhere near the curb on trash day.
I haven’t gotten anything done today. I’ve been in the produce area trying to open this #*@@* plastic bag.
If you find yourself feeling useless, remember it took 20 years, trillions of dollars, and four presidents to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.
I want to be 18 again and ruin my life differently.  I have new ideas.
I’m on two diets. I wasn’t getting enough food on just one.
My mind is like an internet browser. At least 19 open tabs, 3 of them are frozen, and I have no clue where the music is coming from.
Hard to believe I once had a phone attached to a wall, and when it rang, I picked it up without knowing who was calling.
Apparently RSVPing to a wedding invitation “Maybe next time” isn’t the correct response.
She says I keep pushing her buttons.  If that were true, I would have found mute by now.
There is no such thing as a grouchy old person.  The truth is that once you get old, you stop being polite and start being truthful.

WHO KNOWS HOW TO HAVE A CHRISTMAS PARTY?

WE DO !!!

Close to 100 people (approaching one quarter of the Club’s membership!) attended a really enjoyable Christmas lunch on Friday 15th.  The food, the company, the singing, the hampers… the vibe!!!  I’m pretty sure we haven’t had so many people in the building since before COVID, and it was quite simply a blast.  Lots of photos below to prove the point.

.

A couple of special moments – our Polly received a special gift of $$$s from members of the various activity groups at the Club which was accompanied by a memory book with messages from the people who contributed to the gift.  The gift and the messages were a testament to the high regard in which she is held by all of us.

.

At the Club AGM in September, mementos of appreciation for our Life Members were presented. Ann Murray was not able to attend at that time, so we took the opportunity to present her memento at the Christmas lunch.

Thank you everyone who contributed to the hampers, to Polly’s gift, to the preparations including setting up, cleaning up, entertaining, the Christmas tree, and to everyone who attended the party and made it what will certainly remain as a very special memory for me and I hope for everyone who attended.

.

NEXT YEAR – A NEW ACTIVITY GROUP

Beginning on Monday 15 January, Ann Roberts will lead a group for people interested in learning line dancing.  This will suit people wanting to start from scratch or to refresh old memories under Ann’s expert teaching and guidance.  The weekly sessions will be held on Mondays from 1.00 to 2.30pm in Hall 2.  Bring along your best smile and dancing feet – it’s worth taking part just for the music!!  As this will be a teaching group, people will be welcome to join in and start at any time.

.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

The Twelve Days of Christmas

.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love said to me

“I’ve bought a big fresh turkey and a proper Christmas tree!”

On the second day of Christmas much laughter could be heard

As we tucked into our turkey – a most delicious bird!

.

On the third day of Christmas came the people from next door;

The turkey tasted just as good as it had the day before.

On the fourth day of Christmas, some wine and cheese we had;

We were bright and happy, and the turkey?  A little sad.

.

On the fifth day of Christmas, outside the snowflakes scurried

But we were nice and warm inside and we had the turkey curried.

On the sixth day of Christmas, the Christmas spirit died;

The children fought and bickered – we had the turkey fried.

.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love he did wince

When he sat at the table and was offered turkey mince.

On the eighth day of Christmas, the dog had run for shelter –

He saw our turkey pancakes and the glass of Alka-Seltzer!

.

On the ninth day of Christmas, by lunchtime Dad was blotto

As he knew the bird was back again, this time as a risotto!

On the tenth day of Christmas, we were drinking home-made brew;

As if that wasn’t bad enough, we were served turkey stew.

.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, the Christmas tree was moulting,

And even with chilli and oyster sauce, the turkey was revolting!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, we had smiles upon our lips –

The guests had gone, the turkey too, so we dined on Fish and Chips!!

A reminder that Monday next, 11 December is the cut-off time to book in for what is promising to be a super duper Christmas Lunch.  We are using the same catering as last year which means we can look forward to generous servings of delicious food.  We’ll supply some juice, water and our usual tea and coffee, and members are of course welcome to BYO something stronger for some Christmas cheer.

A few final words…

I signed up for a Zoom workout that was too advanced for me.

So when the instructor said to “do a plank, and then bring your knee to the opposite elbow”, I did a modified version where I turned off my computer and made pancakes.

.

Benefits of a good vocabulary!…

.

I recently spoke an old engineering friend of mine and asked what he was working on these days.

He replied that he was working on aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a constrained environment.

I was impressed until, upon further enquiry, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water under his wife’s supervision.

Woden Seniors’ Book Fair has received a generous donation of two boxes of brand-new copies of  “The Happiness Jar” by Canberra author Samantha Tidy. This book was published in 2013 and won the ACT Writing and Publishing Award for Fiction. So, if your Book Group is looking for a book to discuss this could be the one! Some Book Groups have already taken up this opportunity. There are about 40 left at $2.50 each. Polly has supplies for those interested.

And the good news is that our Choir will be providing the entertainment on the day and are rehearsing a Christmas program for our enjoyment – and of course for the enjoyment of the folk at the various nursing homes they visit weekly.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO – hmmmm

.

Why are Kansas and Arkansas pronounced so differently?

Not to mention words that end in ‘ough’ – cough, bough, rough, dough, through, though….

Is it the letter ‘s’ or the letter ‘c’ that is silent in the word scent?

Why does fridge have a ‘d’ in it, but refrigerator doesn’t?

Before was was was, was was is.

The shovel was a ground-breaking invention.

So how come noses run and feet smell?

And you drink a drink, but you don’t food a food?

After a week’s postponement – a day out in the garden in the rain was not looking like fun – our day at Tulip Top gardens on Wednesday this week was very special.  The weather was ideal, blue skies, warm but not hot, lots of flowers and lots of shady areas to sit, talk and enjoy.  A generous serve of fresh sandwiches and a mini pav provided for our lunch ensured that we were fuelled up for the afternoon.  Thanks everyone for helping to make it such an enjoyable occasion, and especially thanks to Roger Tomlins for guiding the walkers from the Club to Bay 6 at the Interchange.

PAST TIMES

As part of the Club’s History Project, every issue that we have been able to obtain of the Meridian Newsletter (so far) has been uploaded to our website – https://www.wodenseniors.org.au/accordions/

The Meridian was published as a paper document between 1991 and 2012 before being replaced by the now familiar digital edition emailed to members.  The publication went from a few typewritten and mechanically duplicated pages to a professionally produced and printed magazine.  Some very interesting reading covering a period of much growth and development for Woden Seniors.

Earlier this year the Committee decided that our Honorary Life members should receive a token memento in recognition of their status. Judy and the two other ‘Lifers’ who were present at the meeting – Sue Allen and Gail Guiliano – were presented with theirs.  Gail also accepted her husband Santo’s plaque on his behalf.  Members will know that we have one other Life Member in Anne Murray who is also to receive a plaque. Many thanks to the Weston Creek Mens’ Shed for making these for us.

SENIORS EXPO

On Thursday last week Woden Seniors, along with Tuggeranong 55 Plus and Canberra Seniors Clubs, were represented at the Seniors Expo held at EPIC.  The Expo is very well organised and presented, and our stall had a constant stream of visitors throughout the day.  A great opportunity to talk to people about what we do at the Club, and to give out LOTS of advance publicity for the 2024 Big Book Fair!

Some final random thoughts…..

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

 * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

* A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
