COMINGS AND GOINGS…..

.

Mindfulness and Meditation sessions

.

Cathy Mauk has led a number of our members in the practices of mindfulness and meditation over the past two years and is proposing a new series of six weekly sessions to begin on Tuesday 2nd July, 10.30 am – 11.45am.

.

We are privileged to have someone of Cathy’s experience and qualifications making herself available to run these mornings which cover a variety of topics and everyone who has taken part in the past has commented on their value.

.

Please let Polly know by Friday 27 June if you are interested joining us for this series, new people are very welcome as well as returning participants.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions on this.

.

Thursday Afternoon Games

.

Sadly, due to falling numbers (to almost zero!) we will no longer offer the cards and games activity on Thursday afternoons.  A similar activity on Monday afternoons is very well attended, so we are assuming that the Thursday time slot doesn’t suit.

This means that the Anne Murray Room is available for something else on Thursdays.  Any suggestions?

.

The foyer chairs

.

Members will know that the armchairs in the foyer are old, in some cases very worn, very heavy and too low for ease of use.  Are you or anyone you know in the process of downsizing?  We are looking for medium sized comfortable chairs (not necessarily matching) in good condition and would be glad to have a look at them and if suitable, give them a new home!!

AND SPEAKING OF BOOKS…

.

A Club service that many members may not know of is the lending library.  This is in the Anne Murray room and members can simply select a book or books to take home, read, enjoy and return when finished.  The lovely people who process the books donated for the Book Fair regularly refresh the lending library, taking away books that have been on the shelf for some time and replacing them with others.

SOUP THANKS

.

The first couple of weeks of Monday soup lunches have been very enjoyable according those who have participated, and are planned to continue during the cold months.

.

As well as being a nice way to spend some time with friends, the proceeds from soup sales are being used for some very useful items for the Club.  Last year we raised enough money to not only heavily subsidise the Christmas lunch but also to replace much of the old, heavy plates and bowls and very dilapidated cutlery with new and modern items.

.

See you there soon and we’d especially like to hear from anyone who would like to help out by making a soup or two.

See you for a Monday soup lunch soon.

WODEN LIBRARY TEMPORARY CLOSURE

.

A message from Libraries ACT

.

Dear Woden Seniors,

.

I wish to inform you that the Woden Library will be closed to the public from Wednesday 8 May until mid-August 2024 for upgrade works.

.

During this time, we will be upgrading the toilet facilities on the ground floor and the heating and cooling systems, as well as undertaking other improvement work to make the library an even more comfortable place space. The transition from gas to electric is being completed as part of the ACT Government Electrification of Government Gas Assets Program.  Unfortunately, due to the significant noise and construction impacts associated with the work, a full closure  of the library branch has been deemed necessary for safety reasons.

.

A temporary pop-up library will be operating from 26 Corinna Street, Phillip (behind Chemist Warehouse) from Monday to Friday, 10am to 5.30pm.  At this temporary location you will be able to collect book club and personal reservations, return items and take part in programs such as Story Time, Giggle and Wiggle, Geri-Fit, and English Conversation classes.  The return chutes outside the Library building will be available for returning books during the period of the closure.

.

For more information on the services available during the closure, visit www.library.act.gov.au.  Libraries ACT apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we look forward to welcoming you back when we re-open in Mid-August.

.

MEMBERSHIP REMINDER

.

While we try to ensure that all members receive a reminder when their membership and parking payments are due, some do slip through the system!  Please check your renewal date – Polly can help with this if needed.

Things to Live By

A balanced diet is a muffin in each hand.
Middle age is when broadness of the mind and narrowness of the waist change places.
Opportunities always look bigger going than coming.
Junk is something you’ve kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.
There is always one more imbecile than you counted on.
Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
By the time you can make ends meet, they move the ends.
Thou shalt not weigh more than thy refrigerator.
Someone who thinks logically provides nice contrast to the real world.
If you had to identify in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved its full potential, that word would be “meetings.”
There is a very fine line between “hobby” and mental illness.

SIMPLE FORMULA FOR LIVING

.

Live beneath your means

Return everything you borrow

Stop blaming other people

Admit it when you make a mistake

Give clothes not worn to charity

Do something nice and try not to get caught

Listen more; talk less

Every day take a 30 minute walk

Strive for excellence, not perfection

Be on time; don’t make excuses

Be kind to unkind people

Take time to be alone

Know when to keep your mouth shut

Learn from the past; plan for the future

Live in the present

Don’t sweat the small stuff

It’s all small stuff.

THANK YOU .. THANK YOU.. THANK YOU.. THANK YOU

We held our ninth BIG Book Fair on the weekend of 5,6 and 7 April. It was a resounding success which raised more than $34,000 for the Club. This was our best result so far!!

.

The success of such an event depends on the support of a large number of members. The whole Club, as a self-funded organisation, benefits from the Book Fair. Its proceeds keep the activity fee low and contribute to building maintenance.

Special thanks go to:

The fantastic members of the teams who spent many hours every week over the last year cleaning, sorting, and packing books and other items. These teams led by Anne Slaney, Judy Henderson and Chris Mackay and including Bill, Agatha, Diana, Evonne, Annie, Pauline, Rhonda, Cindy, Janet K, Janet R, Fay, Sue, Tom, Millie, and Rosemary operated on Monday afternoon and Wednesday and Friday mornings and were responsible for the high quality of the books offered.
Nerida Foster and Doug Wilkinson who managed the storage container and storeroom so efficiently throughout the year. Ken and Renato who filled in for the injured Doug during the Book Fair.
The car park attendants especially David Slaney who did it each day, despite the weather, and Grahame, Roger, and Maruta who helped on the busy Friday morning.
The welcome team led by Jennifer Pratten and Pauline who collected the entry donations and handed out information.

********************************************************************

A little poetry to round off todays message:

.

Ladies and gentlemen, skinny and stout

I’ll tell you a tale I know nothing about

Admission is free so pay at the door

Now pull up a chair and sit on the floor.

.

One bright day in the middle of the night

Two dead boys got up to fight

Back to back they faced each other

Drew their swords and shot each other.

.

A blind man came to watch fair play

A mute man came to shout “Hooray!”

A deaf policeman heard the noise and

Came and killed those two dead boys.

.

He lived on the corner in the middle of the block

In a two-story house on a vacant lot

A man with no legs came walking by

And kicked the lawman in his thigh.

.

He crashed through the wall without a sound

Into a dry creek bed and suddenly drowned

The long back hearse came to cart him away

But he ran for his life and is still gone today.

.

I watched from the corner of the  big round table

The only eyewitness to facts of my fable

But if you doubt my lies are true

Just ask the blind man, he saw it too.

ARE YOU A PIANIST?

We need you!  Our wonderful choir meets to rehearse on Monday mornings and on Thursday afternoons to sing for the residents in some local nursing homes.  They do their best work when accompanied and supported by a pianist.  Choir Director Gail Guiliano would love to talk to you, or maybe someone you know?  about how you might like to be involved.  Polly will be happy to put you in touch with Gail.

SOME TIDYING UP

.

A little bit of paint and some elbow grease and the brick corner between the kitchen and verandah is looking like new again!  We are in the process of looking for a suitable replacement cupboard/bench/dresser to store plates and bowls.

The old fluoro lights in the verandah which gave such poor and often flickering light have been replaced with nice new LEDs which will make for a much more comfortable workspace.

.

And speaking of tidying up, below is a photo of a VERY nice chair tidying up job – thanks John!!

For ease of use and for the safety of everyone in the area, it would be wonderful if we all took care to stack the chairs neatly – black armchairs, armless, and aluminium separately and NO MORE than five high.

THE WASHING UP

It has not gone unnoticed that the number of unwashed cups, plates and spoons and glasses just left for others to deal with has reduced markedly in recent weeks.  Thanks to everyone for your co-operation in this, the benefits being in Club amenity and our health.

.SOUP DAYS ARE COMING

Although it doesn’t feel much like it just yet, the cooler weather is coming and that means soup lunches.

Everyone who is at the Club on Mondays will know that we make and serve soup to eat with friends and fellow club members and for those who would like to do so, to take home.

.For the most part, Sue Allen and I have made the soups and as we know, they were part of the success story that was our 2023 Christmas Lunch.  We would really like to share the fun and invite anyone else who would like to help to do so.

If you would be willing to make a soup – once or twice?  occasionally?  once a month?  please let Sue or me know and we can talk to about what, how and when.  We are thinking of starting up in the last week of May and finishing in the first week of September.

.To date we have done soup on Mondays but would really like to add at least one other day – which could be weekly as we are doing, or maybe monthly, or perhaps even just once or twice over the winter period.   It would be marvellous if there is anyone who would like to organise this and of course Sue and I will be happy to help get it started.  All my contact info as below!

Ron Stewart again…..

All my life, I thought air was free until I bought a bag of chips.

Some days, I amaze myself.

Other days, I look for my phone while I’m talking on it.

Life always offers you a second chance.

It’s called tomorrow.

It takes real skill to:

Choke on air

Fall up stairs

Trip over completely nothing

I have those skills

To be old and wise, first you must be young and stupid

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad

.A little bit of trivia – there are TEN public holidays in the first six months of 2024 and ONE in the second six months.

.BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair is fast approaching, and we are making final arrangements.

Because the container is full it has been decided to close off the receipt of donations a week earlier than previously planned. Donations will not be accepted after Friday  8 March.

We need lots of volunteers to help with setting up on Thursday 4 April from12 noon and packing up on Sunday 7 April at 4 pm. Sign up sheets are at the front counter so please consider putting your name down.

It is time to work hard on the publicity. There are plenty of posters and bookmarks available for circulation. Please see what you can do to distribute these. Posters can be placed in shop windows, on noticeboards and poster silos and at libraries or anywhere else you think suitable. Bookmarks are great for letter boxes and to give to group members or to leave in workplaces. So, let’s get the message out for a bumper Book Fair!

We have been successful in our application for an ACT Government Grant to be used to replace the sound equipment in Hall 1 with a new professionally designed and installed system.  New speakers, media player, lapel mike, mixer amp – and will include an integrated screen for visual presentations, all connected via Bluetooth.

Many thanks to Judy Henderson whose expertise in the area is responsible for the Club’s continuing to receive such grants.

And you can blame Ron Stewart for these…..

Someone just called me normal.  I have never been so insulted in my entire life.

Laughing is the best medicine, but if you are laughing for no reason, you may need medicine.

Don’t judge me, I was born to be awesome.  Not perfect.

The amazing moment when you hear a song you haven’t heard in years and you still remember every word.

Did you notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, they get mad at you.  But when you take them in the car, they stick their head out of the window.

I have a condition that prevents me from going on a diet………I get hungry

My Saturday was going really well.   Until I realised it was Sunday.

Starting tomorrow, whatever life throws at me, I’m ducking so it hits someone else.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

The two newest activities at the Club are proving popular and successful.  Anne Roberts’ lessons on Mondays at 1.00 for people interested in learning about line dancing are attracting a number of enthusiastic beginners.  Likewise the card and board games afternoons on Thursdays at 1.30 pm.  A small core of regulars along with some ‘casuals’ play a range of engaging games with a focus on enjoyment and maybe just a touch of competitive spirit.  New starters welcome at both activities.
