SOUP DAYS (AND WINTER!!) COMING TO AN END

Thanks to everyone who has made soup, joined others for a soup lunch at the Club, or taken soup home for later!  We will stop soup days at the end of this month, ie last Monday soup will be on 25th August, and last Wednesday soup on 27th August.  As in previous years, the funds raised from the sale of soup will be used to subsidise the Club’s very popular Christmas party.

.

A LITTLE GOOD NEWS STORY

.

As most members will know, there is a constant stream of boxes and bags containing donated books coming in to the Club.  Recently, a very upset donor phoned to say that a particular book, precious to the family, had accidentally been put in the box of donated books left at the Club.  The book sorting team on the day got to work and were able to locate the book so it could be returned to its owner.  The team have been enjoying the chocolates brought in to them as a thank you!!

A FEW FINAL THOUGHTS

.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity

It is much easier to apologise than to ask permission

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public

He who smiles in a crisis has found someone to blame

A clean house is a sign of a misspent life

Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it

Stealing ideas from one person is plagiarism, but stealing ideas from many people is research

ANOTHER CONTRIBUTION FROM THE CREATIVE WRITING ACTIVITY GROUP

.

I am … or am I not?

Who am I?  What am I?  Where am I?

Am I who you think I am?

.

Most people try to give an impression of themselves that they think will be acceptable.

Trying to fit in is the biggest obstacle for many of us to be who we really are, disabled or not.

In my opinion everybody is disabled in some way or form, otherwise we wouldn’t have to cover it up.

.

Luckily I never met a perfect person, it must be soooo borning.

We all have our secrets behind closed doors.  And I choose for whom I open that door and how much.

And the windows of my mind… if  you can’t look in, I can’t look out and widen my horizon.

.

I might plant flowers in the front to make it look nice and friendly, but will I allow you to peep inside?

.

Wherever I go, I will find closed doors.  Everybody has them.

.

I am…. And how are you?

THE KITCHEN – continued…

.

.

.

The new floorcovering in the kitchen looks marvellous.  As well as the good looks, It will definitely provide a more hygienic kitchen environment, improve safety (non-slip) and the seamless transition from floor to wall means it is easier to clean with no edges for dirt to accumulate.

While on kitchen and cleaning matters:  to ensure that all crockery and cutlery used at the Club is safe and hygienic to use, please observe the following.

SIMPLY RINSE ANY CROCKERY AND CUTLERY  ITEMS USED AND PLACE IN THE WIRE TRAY  BESIDE THE SINK.  POLLY WILL TAKE THE BASKETS AND PUT THE ITEMS THROUGH THE DISHWASHER/S.

This will mean that all items will be sanitised in the dishwasher after each time they are used.

.

A REPEAT…  PLEASE HELP OUR CARPARK MONITORS

.

We really, really don’t want to tow away a member who is legitimately parked at the Club.

.

PLEASE !!  PLEASE !!   display your parking voucher when you park at the Club.  Ron, Sue and Polly do their utmost to ensure that they only place warning notices, and for second offenders – call the tow truck – on vehicles which do not belong.  This means that for any car without parking voucher on display, a process of checking the number plate against the Club database has to take place.  Save these volunteers time and effort and put your parking permit where it can be seen.  If you have misplaced your permit, Polly will be happy to provide you with a replacement.

A few thoughts for the week:

.

Borrow money from pessimists – they don’t expect it back.

Half the people you know are below average.

99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

A clear conscience is probably the sign of a bad memory.

How do you tell when you are out of invisible ink?

If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain.

The early bird may get the worm, but the second  mouse gets the cheese.

HAPPY 85TH BIRTHDAY

OUR CREATIVE WRITING GROUP

.

There is just no end to the range of talents and skills to be found among our members.  Below is a piece of writing from our Tuesday morning creative writing group.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

.

Memory Loss

.

It was only yesterday, I became aware

That my memory isn’t always there

It’s annoying, like walking with one leg

I looked in my pockets and in my bag

In drawers, but no, nowhere to be found

It left me without making a sound

It is strange I totally agree

So I went on a shopping spree

Just for comfort and trying to forget

And hey!  There it was.  A memory bed.

But after all, whose memory would I buy?

I’m talking to you, you arrogant sales guy

To get into the core of another’s life

Finding out maybe he cheated on his wife

Is not at all what I am looking for

That is not right or fair that’s for sure

How many memories did you take?

How many beds do you plan to make?

Now all the people with memory loss

Have to pay you or maybe your boss

For something you greedily took from them

You should be sent to jail for such a scam

In the meantime I try to find mine

With my memory back I will shine

Shine again until the day I die

And in case I get lost on the way – goodbye.

                               Pauline Mager

.

PLEASE HELP OUR CARPARK MONITORS

.

We are all enjoying the results of their work and there is a way that we all can help.  PLEASE !!  PLEASE !!   display your parking voucher when you park at the Club.  This will save a lot of time for Sue, Ron and Polly as they go about identifying members vs the interlopers and freeloaders in our car park.

Today’s groaners

.

I’ve started investing in stocks: beef, vegetable, chicken. One day I hope to be a bouillianaire.

If you boil a funny bone, it becomes a laughing stock.

I accidentally rubbed ketchup in my eyes. Now I have Heinzsight.

I tried to come up with a carpentry pun that woodwork. I thought I nailed it but nobody saw it.

Singing in the shower is fine until you get shampoo in your mouth. Then it’s a soap opera.

The Black-Eyed Peas can sing us a song but the chick peas can only hummus one.

How much does a chimney cost? Nothing, it’s on the house.

Ran out of toilet paper, now using lettuce leaves. Today was just the tip of the iceberg, and tomorrow romaines to be seen.

My friend Jack says he can communicate with vegetables. That’s right…Jack and the beans talk.

I want to tell you about a girl who only eats plants. You probably have not heard of herbivore.

I was struggling to understand how lightning works and then it struck me.

I went to the paint store to get thinner. Boy. That didn’t work.

SOUP !!  IT’S NOT JUST ON MONDAYS !!

Have you wanted to join in eating soup at the Club, but Mondays are not your day?  Then do I have some news for you!  Beginning on

                             WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK, 11TH JUNE

.

Wednesdays are also soup day.  Many thanks to Kari, soup and homemade bread will be available from around 11.45 onwards for the cost of an activity voucher.  (Cash or voucher welcome.)  The soup is served from the kitchen adjacent to Hall 1, and seating is available in the verandah area.  We have a supply of containers so people can buy any leftover soup (if there is any!) to take home for the same price.

.

Thanks to those who have already offered to help.  Please talk to Sue Allen or to me if you would like to make a soup occasionally on Mondays – or Wednesdays .

AN IMPORTANT  SAFETY REMINDER

.

Luckily, an incident requiring evacuation of the Club is not a common occurrence.  There are however a range of possible such incidents ranging from minor to serious, and it is imperative that, until proven otherwise, we assume that if the alarm is activated it is serious.

.

The evacuation diagram below is displayed in all the public areas of the Club but we are all guilty of rarely if ever actually studying it and taking in the details.

.

· Briefly though, the number one reaction to an evacuation alarm MUST be that everyone actually evacuates the building immediately and safely.  The diagram indicates the exit points and obviously your nearest exit is the one to be used.

.

· It is important that activity leaders bring with them the activity attendance record book.

.

· The designated assembly point outside is, as indicated on the map, on the footpath on the corner where Corinna Street makes its 90 degree turn toward Melrose Drive.

.

· The activity attendance record should then be used to check that everyone listed is present.

.

· ACT Fire and Rescue will have received an automatic notification of the evacuation incident and will attend.  No-one should re-enter the building unless or until Fire and Rescue officers advise that it is safe to do so.

.

The above information is provided in the interest of us having as many members after an incident as there were beforehand.!!

BOOK FAIR DONATIONS

The Book Fair people are back at work and awaiting donations.

We accept clean, resaleable books, jigsaws, CDs, DVDs, and board games. We are particularly interested in recent books, i.e. published in the last ten years.

We cannot accept Readers’ Digest condensed books, encyclopedias, magazines, First Aid manuals, textbooks, dirty, tatty books, vinyl records, and cassette tapes.

.

CAN YOU HELP?

Led by the enthusiasm and skill of one of our members (thanks Kari!!),  the Club is becoming a cleaner, brighter place to be and for all of us to enjoy.

Next project on the list is to clean the leather cushions in the sitting room.  A mini working bee is called for here, so if you are willing and available, we’d love to have some extra hands on Monday 26 May starting at 9.00am.  We have the materials for cleaning and would welcome a few people to help with the application.

SOUP DAYS HAVE STARTED !!

Our Monday soup lunches are now under way.  We make soup and bread for members to have for lunch on Mondays, and there is usually some available for anyone wishing to take a container home for later.  A soup lunch costs one activity voucher or $6 cash ($7.00 from 1 July).   As many will know, the money raised by this activity is directed to the Club’s very popular Christmas Party.

Thanks to those who have already offered to help.  Please talk to Sue Allen or to me if you would like to make a soup occasionally on Mondays or if you would like to help set up a second soup day – which could be weekly, fortnightly or even monthly.

THE LAST WORDS

Cleaning Poem

I asked the Lord to tell me

Why my house is such a mess

He asked if I’d been ‘computering’,

And I had to answer ‘yes.’

He told me to get off my butt,

And tidy up the house.

And so I started cleaning up…

The smudges off my mouse.

I wiped and shined the topside.

That really did the trick…

I was just admiring my good work.

I didn’t mean to ‘click.’

But click, I did, and oops – I found

A real absorbing site

That I got SO way into it –

I was into it all night.

So nothing’s changed except my mouse.

It’s as shiny as the sun.

I guess my house will stay a mess…..

While I sit here on my bum.

Since the introduction of the new MyWay+ ticketing system in November 2024, ACT Seniors Card holders have been able to show bus drivers or customer service officers their card to travel for free on public transport.

This was an initiative of Transport Canberra to allow seniors extra time to obtain a MyWay+ travel card. This initiative is coming to an end in June and seniors will be required to obtain a MyWay+ ticket or set up an account to travel.

There are several ways for this to be done by using your ACT Seniors Card to obtain a concessional fare:

1.Obtaining a physical MyWay+ card at a MyWay+ retail agent. You show the retail agent your ACT Seniors Card, advise what concession you are entitled to (60-69 or 70+) and request a physical card. Using this option does not require the set up of a MyWay+ account on a device and you can simply tap on and off as you travel anonymously. You can see a list of the current retail agents below or visit the Transport Canberra websitefor one near you.
2.Purchasing a printed ticket.  This can be done at a ticket vending machine at a bus station or at light rail stops. Over 70’s will be required to pay a fare using this option as there is no option for a free ticket.
3.Use a Mastercard or Visa. This will not allow you to travel with the ACT Seniors Card concession unless you link it to a MyWay+ account.
4.Set up an MyWay+ account and link your ACT Seniors Card. While this may sound complicated, Transport Canberra have committed to helping ACT Seniors Card holders set up their accounts in person by attending the COTA ACT outreach service at ACT Libraries in May. The locations and dates are as follows:-
 TUGGERANONG LIBRARY – 15 MAY, 10AM-12PM
 WODEN LIBRARY – 22 MAY, 10AM-12PM

Transport Canberra can also provide assistance setting up accounts over the phone by calling 6207 7711 or you can visit their website to see their detailed tutorial videos.

HYGIENE REMINDER

Most of our groups have a break for a cuppa or for a full-on morning or afternoon tea and this is a big part of what makes our Club such a special place.  Just a reminder please to wipe down the table/s afterwards to help us keep everyone healthy and safe.

.

SOUP DAYS STARTING

Winter is almost here and our Monday soup lunches will swing into gear starting on Monday 19 May.  We make soup and bread for members to have for lunch on Mondays, and there is usually some available for anyone wishing to take a container home for later.  A soup lunch costs one activity voucher or $6 cash ($7.00 from 1 July).   As many will know, the money raised by this activity is directed to the Club’s very popular Christmas Party.

.

Are you interested in helping with the soup making on Mondays, or in being part of a second soup day?  Wednesdays see lots of people at the Club and so would probably be the best day for this.

.

Please talk to Sue Allen or to me if you would like to make a soup occasionally on Mondays or if you would like to help set up a second soup day – which could be weekly, fortnightly or even monthly.

The group will be led by Katherine McCarthy and Katherine can be contacted on  0400 456 841 if you have any queries.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS

A very pleasant afternoon tea function was held to thank and celebrate the volunteers who put in so much effort to make our 2025 Big Book Fair such a success.  Thanks to Hindmarsh Bellerive Retirement Village we had a really nice gift hamper to give away and it was decided that each attendee would receive a lucky number ticket and there would be a draw to win it.  To the delight of everyone in attendance, Judy Henderson had the winning ticket.  Congratulations to Judy and our thanks for being an extraordinary leader.

DRAINAGE RECTIFICATION WORKS ON CORINNA STREET

As previously advised, work will commence in coming weeks to rectify the drains in the raised pavement on Corinna Street between Furzer and Keltie Streets.

Variable Message Boards are now being installed providing early notification to all road users.

.

Next week commencing on the 12th of May, some construction fencing and a small site compound will be established in the laneway on the Melrose Drive side of the library crossing. This will include construction signage, with a QR code which links the public to the website, informing them of the upcoming works.

.

The following week, commencing on the 19th of May, actual demolition and construction of stage 1 will commence on the Melrose Dr side of Corinna Street.

.

Overall this is going to mean that from day to day there will be variations regarding which roads are going to allow access to the Club.  The Variable Message Boards will be used to advise of changes as they occur .  We have been advised that access to the Club will remain during the work but  we will need to take extra care and follow the traffic signs.

THE LAST WORDS

Did you ever wonder….

.

How come abbreviated is such a long word?

Why does sour cream have an expiry date?

Why is the alphabet in that order?

If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?

Why is lemon juice mostly artificial ingredients but dishwashing liquid contains real lemons?

Isn’t the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?

The light went out, but where to?

Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

Why is it that when a door is open its ajar, but when a jar is open it’s not adoor?

Why do we put suits in a garment bag and garments in a suitcase?

BOOK FAIR

Once again, thanks to the organisers and workers we have pulled off a very successful Book Fair!!

Below from Judy Henderson, Book Fair Co-ordinator:

We held our tenth BIG Book Fair on the weekend of 4, 5 and 6 April.  It was a great success which raised over $35,000 for the Club.

.

The success of such an event depends on the support of a large number of members. The whole Club, as a self-funded organisation, benefits from the Book Fair. Its proceeds keep the activity fee low and contribute to every area of Club expenditure – building maintenance, heating and cooling, cleaning, insurance…and no end of general expenses.

.

Special thanks go to:

The fantastic members of the teams that spent many hours every week over the last year cleaning, sorting, and packing books and other items. These teams led by Anne Slaney, Judy Henderson and Chris Mackay and including Bill, Agatha, Diana, Evonne, Annie, Pauline, Rhonda, Trish, Muriel, Tracy, Cindy, Janet K, Fay, Sue, and Rosemary operated on Monday afternoon and Wednesday and Friday mornings and were responsible for the high quality of the books offered.
Nerida Foster and Doug Wilkinson who managed the storage container and storeroom so efficiently throughout the year. Between them they stored and then moved into the designated places 1600 boxes of stock.
The car park attendants especially Richard Game, David Slaney and Ron Stewart who did it all day each day.
The welcome team led by Jennifer Pratten who collected the entry donations and handed out information.
Catherine Masters who did the bookkeeping.
Don Puttick, Jenny Gregory, Roni, Maureen, Rhonda, Sandra, Von, and Viola, and their helpers on the checkouts.
Chris Mackay and Janet Kahler who managed Hall 1 and all their helpers.
Mark Sheen and Agatha who looked after the jigsaws, games, DVDs, and CDs in the veranda.
Bill, Tracy and Adrian, who managed the non-fiction in Hall 2, and all their helpers.
Sue and Katherine who managed the children’s area and all their helpers.
Anne Slaney who managed the President’s Table and Better Books and was responsible for researching and preparing the collectable books for the President’s Table.
Tony and the team who unpacked and returned the tables and bread trays.
Don and Ron who installed the roadside signs.
Maruta and Roger who, as multi skilled backup persons,  were available for different roles at the drop of a hat.
The Marist students and their teacher Nathan Ahearne who helped pack up.
The Canberra College students who helped with setting up and packing up.
The members and their friends who helped set up on Thursday 3 April.
The members who came to help pack up at the end – it was great to have some fresh, energetic people.
Ann Baker and the WOWs (Watercolours on Wednesdays group) for the beautiful cards and bookmarks, and display of paintings.
The catering team who donated the food for the volunteers and Kari who took care of the volunteers’ room.
Polly for all her incredible assistance. No task was ever too much trouble. She made thousands of bookmarks, scores of signs, and undertook numerous administrative tasks at the drop of a hat and always with a smile.
President Jenny for her calm, thoughtful approach to all tasks, sound guidance, willing assistance, and support.
Ron and the team who managed the building and surrounds throughout the Book Fair.
 Sandra Gray for the publicity.
The card making group for all the cards that were for sale.
Activity groups for putting up with the disruption before and after the event.
Justine Burke of Luton Weston Creek and Molonglo Valley for printing the posters.
The Weston Creek Uniting Church for the loan of tables.
James Gourley of NewBeach Co for the poster design.
The generous community that donated books, and
Last but not least  – all who bought the books, jigsaws, games, CDs, DVDs, and paintings.
An Afternoon Tea to thank all the Book Fair volunteers will be held at the Club on THURSDAY AFTERNOON 24TH MAY at 2pm.  You are all invited.   Please RSVP to Polly if you are able to attend.

.

During the last year we continued to reach out to the community, resulting in many benefits for those concerned. We assisted the Toora women’s refuges with donations of activity books for children. We donated some boxes of left over children’s books to a literacy project in New Guinea, Buk Bilong Pikanini. We donated left over books to Roundabout. We donated regularly to the Hughes Community Centre Book Exchange as well as street libraries.

The Book Fair Committee will be having a review meeting in the coming weeks so think about how you would like to be more involved or anything that would help to make the 2026 Book Fair even better and let us know. We are always looking for new volunteers, who can bring new ideas. Some of us are retiring, so we desperately need some younger people to take it on if the Book Fair is to continue.

PARKING

The efficacy of our new regime is obvious as you drive in to the Club and there are parking spots for all.

For now we are continuing to monitor the vehicles parked and it will help the volunteers doing this work if members can display their parking permits.  This will save the legs of the volunteers and save Polly’s time checking the membership database.  If you don’t have or have lost your permit card, Polly will be happy to provide you with a new one!!

.

RAFFLE – STILL TIME TO GET YOUR TICKETS

A reminder of our raffle….tickets are $1.00 each and are available from Polly now, singly or in books of 6…. to buy for yourself and/or sell .   The raffle will be drawn on Friday 9th May at the Club.   The prizes are on display at Polly’s counter.

Don’t miss your chance to win one of these lovely handmade items – or just think of the massive brownie points you could earn by selling the winning ticket to a friend.

THE LAST WORDS

The CEO of a major bank made economists think when he said:

′′A cyclist is a disaster for the country’s economy: he doesn’t buy cars and doesn’t borrow money to buy them. He doesn’t pay for insurance. He doesn’t buy fuel. He doesn’t pay for maintenance and repairs. He doesn’t use paid parking. He doesn’t cause major accidents. He doesn’t require multi-lane highways. He doesn’t become obese.”

“Healthy people are neither necessary nor useful to the economy. They don’t buy medicine. They don’t go to hospitals or doctors. They add nothing to the country’s GDP.”

“On the contrary, each new McDonald’s outlet creates at least 30 jobs, in fact it provides employment for 10 cardiologists, 10 dentists, 10 expert dieticians and nutritionists, in addition, of course, to the people who work in the outlet itself.”

PS: Walking is even worse. People who walk don’t even buy a bike.
