Some final random thoughts…..

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

 * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

* A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

COTA SENIORS EXPO – Thursday 21 September

Again this year Woden Seniors Club will join with other seniors clubs in the Canberra area share a stall at the COTA Seniors Expo at EPIC.

.

We will have information available about our Club and its activities and particularly about our 2024 Book Fair.  The Expo is well worth the trip to the north side (aka the dark side!!) of town with stalls and information sessions from a huge number of providers of interest and value for seniors.  Drop in and say hello on the day.

Thanks Margaret Wright for the following wisdom:

.

Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Some people try to turn back their “odometers.” Not me.

I want people to know why I look this way.

I’ve travelled a long way and a lot of the roads were not paved.

Ah! Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable.

Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth.

May you always have:

Large print,

Love to share,

Cash to spare,

Tires with air,

And friends who care.

The sad news of Paul’s death was advised to members by email on Monday.

.Paul was President of Woden Seniors from 2012 to 2021, succeeding Roy Parekh and Anne Murray.

Among his many contributions to the welfare of the Club and its members was his work to develop the Book Fair from its small beginnings to what is now a well-known Canberra event.

.Paul will be remembered for his love of Argentinian tango dancing, music of all kinds, of travel, adventure and the acquisition of new skills and interests, and for his love for his family.

.FOR MEMBERS WHO HAVE TPG, iiNet, INTERNODE or WESTNET email addresses

TPG, iiNet, Internode and Westnet Email Addresses – Action Required by 15/9/2023*

.The Internet Service provider TPG has announced that it, and its subsidiaries iiNet, Internode and Westnet, will stop providing email services on 15 September 2023*. This means that if you have a @tpg.com.au or @iinet.net.au or @internode.on.net or @westnet.com.au email address you will need to do one of the following:

.If you want to keep your current email address you will need to transfer it to the paid email provider The Messaging Company before 15 September 2023*. It cannot be transferred to any other provider and will be deleted if not transferred. Your current provider will pay The Messaging Company’s email service charge for you until 15 September 2024. After 15 September 2024 you will be responsible for The Messaging Company charges, which are currently unavailable, or your account/email address will be cancelled. When signing up with The Messaging Company you will be required to agree to their terms and conditions (including charges) and privacy policy (including how they handle your personal information). It is important you read these documents.

.For full details (including links to terms and conditions and privacy policy documents) and to initiate the transfer please go to the respective website for your current provider listed below.

.If you do not want to keep your current email address it will automatically become inactive from 15 September 2023* and you will not be able to send or receive messages using that address. Any messages stored on the server will be deleted. Please refer to the website of your current provider (listed below) for full details.

.As a replacement you may choose to create a new email address with a free email provider such as Gmail (@gmail.com) available at Create your Google Account or Outlook (@outlook.com) at Create account (live.com). If you use an Apple product (iPhone, iPad, Mac computer) you may already have an iCloud email address (@icloud.com or @me.com or @mac.com) which you can use. Or you can change to another Internet Service Provider which offers an email service in their plan.

.If you do change your email address it is recommended for personal ID security reasons that you do not include your year or date of birth in the username, as is commonly done. Also, please ensure you notify Polly and all your current contacts, including financial and other businesses and subscription services of the new address.

.TPG https://support.tpg.com.au/tpg-email-messaging-company

Westnet https://help.westnet.com.au/westnet-email-messaging-company

.*Some existing customers of TPG and its subsidiaries have received an email about the new arrangements but to date not all have been individually notified. Some have been informed their email address may be suspended earlier than 15 September 2023 if they do not opt-in to transfer by then. You are therefore advised to activate the transfer as soon as possible if that is your intention.

And a few things to think about….

.

What if my dog only brings back the ball because he thinks I like throwing it?
If poison is past its use by date, is it more poisonous, or is it no longer poisonous?
Which letter is silent in the word scent, the S or the C ?
Do twins ever realise that one of them is unplanned?
Why is the letter w, in English, called double u ?  Shouldn’t it be called double v ?
Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and it just take up to 100 years to fully work?
Every time you clean something you make something else dirty.
The word ‘swims’ upside down is still ‘swims’.
Intentionally losing a game of rock paper scissors is just as hard as trying to win.

BOOK FAIR NEWS

.

In a month it will be Spring!

If you are planning on doing some Spring cleaning, think of the Book Fair. We could use plain book ends e.g. L shaped metal ones, small stands suitable for displaying books and of course good quality books, jigsaws, CDs, DVDs and board games. Tell your friends and family too. There are some new bookmarks available from Polly which you can give people to be tell them about the Fair. They include the dates on the front and a list of items people can donate on the back.

.

Another thing we need are wine boxes – they are just the right size for packing larger sized books.

.

And of course, we always welcome new helpers – if you are interested let Polly know and someone will get in touch with you to discuss how you may be able to help.

Scratch for Seniors at National Science Week!

To celebrate National Science Week, which runs from August 12 – 20, the Australian Government is again supporting creative computing workshops for seniors using Scratch.

Aimed at people over 55 years of age, the workshops will let you unleash your imagination to produce amazing, colourful, musical, moving creations, that can be shared with anyone. It’s fabulous for keeping the brain active and all you have to know to get started is how to use a mouse.

Four free workshops, with lunch provided, will be held at the ANU from 10am to 1pm on August 12, 13, 19, and 20.

To register for one of these workshops, please visit:

https://www.scienceweek.net.au/event/creative-computing-for-seniors-workshop-using-scratch/acton/ or email: u1518303@anu.edu.au.

You may not know this….

Many inanimate things have a gender.

.

Ziploc bags are male, because they hold everything in but you can see right through them.

A tyre is male because it goes bald and is often over-inflated.

A hot air balloon is male because to get it to go anywhere you have to light a fire under it, and of course there’s the hot air bit.

Sponges are female because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.

A web page is female, because its always being hit on.

A hammer is male, because it hasn’t changed much over the past 5,000 years but it’s handy to have around.

An hourglass is female, because over time the weight shifts to the bottom.

A subway is male, because it uses the same old lines to pick someone up.

A remote control is female.  You thought it would be male didn’t you?  But consider this:  a man would be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

MISSING PIANO COVER

The cover for the Hall 2 piano has gone missing – probably during the Book Fair or clean-up following the Book Fair earlier this year.  The cover is beige coloured, lined and fitted to the piano’s shape, with “FRONT” marked on – yes – the front.  We think it may have been folded up and put away somewhere in the Club where something else could have been put on it, in front of it or otherwise hiding it.  A reward (packet of TimTams) is offered for information leading to the reunion of the piano and its cover.

FUN AND GAMES

Thursday afternoons at the Club are the scene of some fun and games – our Games activity is proving a popular, pleasant, and even a bit competitive way to spend some time with friends (bring your own or use some of ours!!!).  Drop in between 12 noon and 4 pm to be in it.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

.Many people like to volunteer for the good of our community. Here is an opportunity that could appeal to some of you. You will be aware that part of a medical student’s training is to do tests on patients to measure pulse and blood pressure etcetera and to look for symptoms. Much of this training is done on ‘pretend’ patients, people who volunteer to stand in for real patients. Covid has had an effect on this program, and the medical school is looking for new volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Medical School – Patient Recruitment at patientrecruitment.medicalschool@anu.edu.au\

GOODBYE CONCRETE LOG

This week the Club’s Garden and Facilities sub-committees oversaw the removal of the crumbling and much detested concrete lump on the driveway into the rear carpark and assisted in its replacement with a heavy duty rubber road ramp.  The height difference between the lower and higher levels is still the same, albeit now much safer and smoother, and members are reminded to drive over this area with care.

And of course, some more drivel for seniors…………

.

As I watch this generation try to re-write history, one thing I’m sure of – it will be misspelled and have no punctuation.

.

I don’t let my age define me, but the side effects are getting harder to ignore.

.

If you dropped something when you were younger, you just picked it up.  Now you stare at it for a bit, contemplating if you actually need it any more.

.

I never thought I’d be the type of person who would get up early to exercise.  Turns out I was right.

.

I didn’t get old on purpose, it just happened.  If you’re lucky, it could happen to you!!

.

Being a little older, I am very fortunate to have someone call and check on me every day.  He is from India and is very concerned about my car warranty.

We’ve now had two Thursday afternoon Games/Social sessions and they have proved to be a very enjoyable way to spend some time with old and new friends at the Club.  We’ve played Scrabble, Bananagrams, a board game iteration of Sudoku, Rummikub and Flip-Bo.  We also have Sequence, Monopoly and MahJong and cards to play eg 500 or Euchre.  If your favourite isn’t mentioned here, we’re open to suggestions!

.

Bring friends with you, or just come along yourself and we’ll find you a seat at the table to play your choice of game, or just come for the cuppa and chat.  No need to book in, just come along.  You are invited to come for some, any, or all of the time between 12 noon and 4.00 pm.

REMINDER – HALL 1 FLOOR REPAIRS

.

The Club will be closed to all users on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 June to allow for the re-finishing of the floor in Hall 1.  A part of the floor required repair earlier in the year and the final part of this work involves a light sanding and re-coating of the whole floor area.

THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

An afternoon tea to say thank you to the members and friends of the Club who so willingly gave their time to sort, clean, pack and store books all through the year, set up and set out everything for the Book Fair, help on the days of the Fair and then pack up and return the Club to its usual condition ready for all our usual activity groups.  Their efforts resulted in our most financially successful Fair to date.

ANOTHER BOOK FAIR-RELATED THANK YOU

This time to Ross Power from the Rotary Club of Murrumbidgee-Canberra who loaded up his vehicle with the boxes of children’s books and delivered them to Orange Primary School which lost most of its school library to the floods earlier this year.  A message back from the School’s Librarian expressed thanks for the condition and quality of the books and appreciation for the work done in categorizing and labelling the boxes.

The Satnav – by Pam Ayres

with apologies to all wives!!

I have a little Satnav,

It sits there in my car

A Satnav is a driver’s friend,

It tells you where you are.

I have a little Satnav I’ve had it all my life

It’s better than the normal ones,

My Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions,

Especially how to drive

“It’s sixty miles an hour”, it says,

“You’re doing sixty-five”.

It tells me when to stop and start,

And when to use the brake

And tells me that it’s never ever,

Safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red,

And when it goes to green

It seems to know instinctively,

Just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in front,

And all those to the rear

And taking this into account,

It specifies my gear.

I’m sure no other driver,

Has so helpful a device

For when we leave and lock the car,

It still gives its advice.

It fills me up with counselling,

Each journey’s pretty fraught

So why don’t I exchange it,

And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,

Makes sure I’m properly fed

It washes all my shirts and things,

And keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages,

And my tendency to scoff,

I only wish that now and then,

I could turn the bugger off.

MEMBERSHIP

A reminder to check that your membership is current…. and if you have a parking permit that it too is current.  Financial members are covered by the Club’s insurance while leading or participating in activities and the Club is covered too.  During 2020-2022 membership dates were extended and some of us have become a bit confused about when renewals are due. Please check with Polly if you are unsure, either next time you are at the Club or by phone on 6282 2573.

DO YOU HAVE AN @grapevine EMAIL ADDRESS?

Thanks to our IT guru Richard for the following advice:

Members with email addresses username@grapevine.com.au, username@grapevine.net.au and username@homemail.com.au are reminded that they will no longer be able to use these email addresses to send, receive or forward emails from 6 June 2023, as notified in advice they should have already received from iiNet.

Full details of the closure including how to back up important emails you wish to keep can be found at Email Service Closure | iiHelp (iinet.net.au) .Free email addresses you might wish to consider as replacements are Gmail, available at Create your Google Account and Outlook at Create account (live.com). If you use an Apple product (iPhone, iPad, Macbook) you should already have an iCloud email address which you can use.

If you wish to continue to receive communications from Woden Seniors after 6 June (e.g. Fortnightly News, membership renewal reminders) you will need to obtain a new email address and notify Polly. You will also need to notify all your current contacts, including financial and other businesses and subscription services, of your new email address, preferably prior to 6 June.

PARKING AT THE CLUB

Our Club is very privileged to have car parking available for members on our site.  As you know, we have Wilson Parking to manage the parking so ensure that people who are not entitled to use the facility are detected and fined.  For your safely we really recommend that members don’t approach anyone who may look like they are not bona fide – you are risking an unpleasant encounter at the very least and rest assured, Wilsons will catch up with offenders in due course.  (And a reminder – don’t forget to check that your parking permit is current and that your number plate details are correctly recorded to avoid the attentions of Wilsons!)
