THANK YOU AFTERNOON TEA

A great turnup for a special thank you afternoon tea for the Book Fair volunteers.  We enjoyed a delicious spread, thanks to Kari and the team (who were Book Fair volunteers themselves!). The very special part of the afternoon was to say thank you to Judy Henderson for her years of service to the Club as Book Fair Co-ordinator.  Judy has retired from that position (although not from the book sorting group) and has led the Book Fair from its early beginnings to be the amazingly successful event that we now know.

.

.

…..and of course we will need a new Co-ordinator.

Cue the appearance of our new Book Fair Co-ordinator!

.

I am delighted to welcome Deb Stevens who has volunteered – with a minimum of arm-twisting – to take on the position.

Deb has provided the following little pen-picture:

.

I worked in the book trade for over 30 years.  The last 20 years as a sales agent and account manager for Allen # Unwin, responsible for

SE NSW and the ACT.

I retired in 2018 to care for my mother who had dementia.

In retirement I’ve served two terms on the board of Marion Writers and am still actively involved in the writing community.

I volunteer  as a news reader at Radio 1RPH.

And there is always the very busy family who keep me on my toes.

LUNCH AND LEARN PROGRAM

The first of these sessions was held on Tuesday with forty members in attendance.  Basil LeBrooy from the Council of the Ageing spoke about the services COTA provides and specifically about navigating the aged care system.  I think that the fact that many people went straight to book in for the remaining sessions says how well received it was.

.

Below is a table of the upcoming sessions. The sixth topic, just added will be on Tuesday 28 July and the presenter is Dr. Nathan D’Cunha, Associate Professor, Dementia and Cognition Theme Leader, Centre for Ageing Research and Translation, University of Canberra.

.

The sessions are on the dates/times set out in the table below and will be followed by a hot lunch.  .

The cost of the lunch is $7.00 or a voucher for a maximum of 25 people, so it is essential that you book specifically for whichever lunch session/s you wish to attend.

Anyone may attend the information component session/s free of charge – however we would still appreciate you letting us know if you plan to attend the session but not the lunch so we know how many chairs to put out.

BIRTHDAY BOY !!

There were in fact two birthday parties last week in the table tennis group – it clearly takes more than one celebration to cover a 98th birthday.

Congratulations to Peter Witting – 98 years young, and still active!!

Things to remember:

.

Money can’t buy happiness but it definitely makes misery easier to live with.
If you think nobody cares if you’re alive, try missing a couple of payments.
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.  Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
A bargain is something you don’t need at a price you can’t resist.
A computer once beat me at chess,   but it was no match for me at kickboxing.

COMMUNITY NOTICE

RSPCA this winter

We love our fur babies, but many have been abandoned, neglected or abused. This winter, please consider donating clean towels and blankets to the RSPCA shelter – the shelter animals are in constant need of clean towels and blankets to stay warm and comfortable. You can also help by donating unopened dry or wet pet food. Of course, financial donations are always welcome. RSPCA is located at 12 Kirkpatrick Street, Weston (off Cotter Road, down past McDonalds). For more ways to help: https://rspca-act.org.au/helping-rspca-act
