AGM- 12noon, Monday 19 September

The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 12noon on Monday 19 September, more information will be posted in the Club.

The 3rd Big Book Fair

The Book Fair is over for another year, we raised in excess of $14,000 over the three days of the Fair.

The Big Book Fair organising committee, Judy Bartlett, Judy Henderson, Anne Murray and Paul McGlew, would like to thank all those who helped with the Book Fair. People helped in so many ways – many gave a few hours each week over the last few months to sort, clean and pack books. Others helped with setting up, welcoming customers, restocking boxes during the three days of the Book Fair, and packing up. Then there were those who served and provided the delicious food for the morning and afternoon teas and the cakes for the cake stall.

It was a fantastic team effort with people pitching in from so many activity groups such as the Wednesday Exercise Group, the Table Tennis players, the Recorder Orchestra, the Dancing Class, the Bridge players, the Choir, the Art group, the Mah Jong group and so on. As well as members there were some ‘outsiders’ who did a wonderful job too such as Rohan Cumpston, Sarah Cumpston and Mark Sheen on the checkout and Judy B’s grandsons Luke, Simon and their friend Nathan who helped pack up and move tables.

All your help was much appreciated.

The 3rd Big Book Fair: Friday 12 – Sunday 14 August 2016

The Third BIG Book Fair is now only 4 weeks away and it is time to start letting friends, family and community organisations know about it.

Members can help get the word out by:

• Picking up some Book Fair bookmarks from the front counter and handing them out to people you know;

• Posting the information on your Facebook page if you have one;

• Providing the information to groups you belong to for inclusion in their newsletters.

The dates and times are:

Friday 12 August 11 am to 6 pm

Saturday 13 August 10 am to 4 pm

Sunday 14 August 10 am to 4 pm.

We are also looking for Volunteers to help or bake… A few words from Lutana, our resident poet:

“Dear Woden Seniors’ Friends,

Last year’s Big Book Fair was a sensational hit,

Thanks to all the generous folk who contributed their bit –

They cooked, they packed books, they gave us their time –

The willing efforts that they all made were utterly sublime!

The Hall was crammed with so many fascinating books,

The kitchen was monitored by several enthusiastic cooks,

The records, disks and story tapes were shelved in nooks and crannies

Just waiting to be discovered by grandpas and grannies.

This August’s Big Book Fair, with tables fully stacked,

Will be held on Friday 12th till Sunday 14th, to be exact,

Yet midst the browsing, wouldn’t a “ coffee-break” go down well?

Especially if there were contributions of luscious cakes to sell?

The Senior’s Club seeks folk who are happy to bake

Slices, muffins, tarts, buns or any fancy cake,

Teacakes, cupcakes, fruit loaves or even a rum ball…

(A date and walnut log is my favourite of all!)

Whichever generous contributions you may bring to the Hall,

We ‘re thrilled to accept your items on the Saturday’s Cake Stall;

And if you’d like to help out and join our cheery company

We’ll welcome you with open arms and share a cup of tea!

Please bring along your contributions for the Cake Stall on Saturday, 13th August, by about 9.30am – all items, be they experiments or a display of your forté, will be gratefully and enthusiastically accepted for sale.”

Keeping up with the Modern World

Those members who found Grahame Hellyer’s talks on digital stuff like phones useful, or attended his U3A classes and, of course, those who couldn’t attend them, may find his blog useful. The blog, a series of short articles on the internet, is designed to help seniors keep up with the changing times (not to suggest that you need lots of gadgets!) It also includes articles on Grahame’s hobby horses like keeping our brains active through things like music and learning languages.

The blog is at http://thedigitalaged.org/ . The blog has being going, sometimes intermittently, for two years, so, if reading the older entries, just bear in mind that technology is changing pretty quickly.
