LED lighting throughout the Club

The Club has been progressively replacing existing lighting in Halls 1 and 2 and the Kitchen and Veranda areas with LED lighting. The advantage of switching to LED lighting is that it will give us significant savings in electricity usage and with the longer life cycle of LED lights lower maintenance costs. There is the added advantage of now being able to use dimmers with the lighting in Hall 1. There are now three lighting circuits in Hall 1.

2017 Big Book Fair, 11 – 13 August 2017

We are desperately seeking helpers to sort, clean and pack the wonderful donations of books, games (especially old board games), DVDs, vinyl records, CDs, postcards, and jigsaw puzzles for our 2017 Big Book Fair.

  • One of the team will be in the Veranda from 10 am to 12 noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to show new volunteers what to do.
  • It is a very easy task and involves cleaning and sorting the books. There are detailed guidelines available on what to do.
  • If you would prefer another time we will arrange a mutual time that suits you and one of the team to be there to show new volunteers what to do.

Lost – Small Silver iPod

A small silver iPod (and black connecting cable) was lost (or accidently taken) at the completion of the Gentle Exercise class on Tuesday 28 February. The iPod contains Donna’s music and is an essential piece of equipment for her classes. If anyone has any information about its whereabouts please speak to Polly.

SPIRAL 2017 PROGRAM

March 9 National Zoo and Aquarium

Renee Osterloh, Operations Manager at the National Zoo and Aquarium, was our guest speaker on 17 March 2016. She featured in the Canberra Times on February 5 in this excellent front-page story. We will meet her again when we visit the zoo. The Flexible Bus will be at Curtin at 10.00 and the overflow will follow in a convoy of cars. This event will be a later finish than usual – the bus will pick us up at 1.00. Getting around the zoo can be awkward for our less mobile members who might be restricted to the aquarium area. Normal entrance fee for Seniors is $33 but thanks to the ACT Government there will be no charge to you. For planning purposes, please let me know if you are interested in coming.

March 23 Tony Turner

Star of stage and screen, Tony is directing Repertory’s season of Trelawney of the Wells. This “fast paced portrayal of theatrical-company life in the 1860s” runs from March 29 to April 9 and is well suited to an audience like us.

April 6 Gai Brodtmann

Gai, our local member in the House of Representatives, recognised our founder Gwenyth George as a “legend” in a speech in the House of Representatives on 26 November, 2012. She is coming along to meet us and to talk about the work she does.

May 6 (and August 3) The Heartbeats

Are you one of the people who has been asking me when The Heartbeats are performing for us this year? Fun, laughter and familiar songs from the boys accompanied, as always, by the lovely Margaret on piano. Here are their dates. Note: when The Heartbeats play for us we will have morning tea first and they will perform from 11.00.

Still to confirm dates are:

Paul Jurak – the kayak cameraman

Dr Susannah Helman – curator of The Sell: Australian Advertising 1790s to 1990s, the current exhibition at the National Library,

Opera singer Rachael Duncan, one of the most popular visitors in 2016.

The Spiral Photo Album gives a good sense of who we are and what we do.

We are a group of senior citizens (60+ to 90+), we are non-denominational with people from varied backgrounds, occupations and origins. There are no fees but a $1 contribution to costs is requested. We are seeking new members, helpers and guest speakers. You are not obliged to come every week and you can come for the talk and/or the morning tea. Any questions or suggestions please contact me or one of the other people on the list above.
