This week in the Club
It has been a busy week: on Sunday I had the pleasure of accepting a grant from the Southern Cross Club which will allow us to replace our ageing table tennis tables. 

The Vice President, Anne Murray and I met our new patron, Lady Cosgrove on Tuesday afternoon for tea at Government House.  Lady Cosgrove is very interested in the Club and is looking forward to joining us for our Christmas luncheon party on Monday 8 December.  I’m sure she will have some interesting stories to tell. 

On Wednesday, the new ACT Government Minister for Ageing, Mick Gentleman MLA visited the Club.  We had an opportunity to show him the diverse range of activities available in the club and bend his ear a little about how much we like it where we are.

Mahjong
Mahjong is played each Wednesday afternoon, from 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm in the Anne Murray room.  Rose McNeice will provide tuition for beginning players.

The Big Book Fair
The Big Book Fair, what a triumph! It was wonderful to see the Club set up for the Book Fair. So many Club members volunteered to help out over the week-end: on the welcome committee at the front door to the tea/coffee and cake purveyors in the kitchen/dining area and those restocking tables in Halls 1 and 2, and the cake stall. There was a steady stream of keen book buyers and we managed to meet our target of raising $10,000.

So many people contributed to making this a successful event that it is difficult to acknowledge everyone. Some that do deserve a special mention are the Cumpston family, in particular Rohan, Anne and Sarah who worked all week-end; Margaret Bourke who has driven this initiative and her team who have been cleaning, sorting and pricing books for nearly twelve months and Judy Henderson for her communication strategy that achieved such good coverage in the local media.

Annual General Meeting
It is that time of the year again, the Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 12 noon on Monday 22 September 2014 in Hall 1.

The Big Book Fair – Friday 8 to Sunday 10 August 2014
The Big Book Fair is on next week-end.
From 11am to 6pm Friday 8 August
10am to 4pm Saturday 9 August
10am to 4 pm Sunday 10 August

The team has assembled an extensive range of good quality books for sale.

Drop-in to browse through the books.  There will be morning and afternoon tea available. Storytelling for your grandchildren is scheduled for 11 am on Saturday & Sunday with impromptu sessions at other times. And a cake stall on Saturday morning.

Please help spread the word about the Big Book Fair through whatever networks you have available to you.

Hai Song’s Winter Seminar – 9.30 am to Noon Thursday 31 July
Moxibustion is a very popular Traditional Chinese Medicine technique used widely in China for a variety of purposes, including improving circulation, preventing breech birth, and pain relief.  Its’ varied benefits makes it a powerful healing tool for many of the older members of the population.  This technique involves the burning of a type of herb called the mugwort.  The heat penetrates the skin and stimulates the muscles.  Due to the nature of this technique, there will be a small amount of smoke involved, but rest assured it is completely safe and most of the treatments are pain free.

I will also be talking about taking care of yourself during the winter seasons, mainly giving out tips to prevent cold and flu, as well as keeping the body warm and circulation going during this time of the year. A lot of chronic health problems have a tendency to flair up during the colder seasons, so I will be addressing all these issues.

ACT Older Persons Assembly –Consultations
Members of the public are invited to attend a community consultation forum to provide input into the second ACT Older Persons Assembly that will be held on 1 October 2014.

By popular demand, the four forums held in June are being supplemented with an additional forum in the Tuggeranong area:

Members are invited to attend a multicultural community consultation forum to help shape the second ACT Older Persons Assembly to be held on 1 October 2014. The theme of this year’s Assembly is ‘Canberra Age-friendly City’.  Three key areas of focus will be:

Table Tennis? 

Table tennis anyone?  Just reminding you that there is an active and social group that play table tennis in Hall1 on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9.30am to 12.30pm.  All skill levels welcome.

Respecting Patient Choices

The ACT Government’s Respecting Patient Choices Program is sponsoring a series of “play’s” (they are free to attend to the community) on the 19th and 21st of May.  The Play’s are designed to facilitate community conversation about death, grief and living.  Four Funerals in one day is based on real people’s stories and is an entertaining and inspiring performance.
