ACT Budget for Seniors

There is some good news in the ACT Budget for Seniors in the Woden area:

  • free off-peak bus travel for seniors;
  • funding to design a nurse led walk- in Centre in Weston;
  • expansion of the Woden Library.

Soup Kitchen

Sue Allen has the soup kitchen is up and running on Wednesdays only at this stage. Choice of two soups and bread for $5. If you would like to help out with cooking or serving please let Sue know.

Funding for the Club

You may have seen a recent article in the Canberra Times reporting my comments on elements of the ACT Budget, specifically in relation to the lack of regular ACT Government funding for the Seniors Clubs in Canberra.

The Woden Seniors Club is primarily funded by members through activity fees, fundraising and ad hoc hiring of rooms and to a lesser extent car parking spaces to other groups.

The ACT Government provides ad-hoc grants for specific purposes, for example the new chairs we bought recently, this funding however represents less than 2% of our annual turnover. When we have approached the ACT Government for a regular supplement to our funding, the response has been to approach the local Licensed Clubs for funds from their poker machine revenue.

The Woden Seniors Club is registered as a Charity for Taxations purposes which means that any donations made to the Club are tax deductible.

2017 Big Book Fair, 11 – 13 August 2017

This year’s Big Book Fair from 11 to 13 August will be a bumper event. We already have many more books than this time last year and the container is almost full.

Thank you to all the people who have volunteered to help sort and clean the books – we have a very keen and dedicated team, who can always do with more help if anyone has an hour or so to spare on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning.

This year the Woden Seniors Club celebrates its 45th Anniversary! The Club started in a very small way in a private house 45 years ago on 23rd October, and look at it now! We want to make the celebrations something special for all our members. We could have an Open Day? High Tea? a Concert? There are lots of possibilities. If you are interested in helping out or have ideas on what would be fun to do, please let Polly know.

LED lighting throughout the Club

The Club has been progressively replacing existing lighting in Halls 1 and 2 and the Kitchen and Veranda areas with LED lighting. The advantage of switching to LED lighting is that it will give us significant savings in electricity usage and with the longer life cycle of LED lights lower maintenance costs. There is the added advantage of now being able to use dimmers with the lighting in Hall 1. There are now three lighting circuits in Hall 1.

2017 Big Book Fair, 11 – 13 August 2017

We are desperately seeking helpers to sort, clean and pack the wonderful donations of books, games (especially old board games), DVDs, vinyl records, CDs, postcards, and jigsaw puzzles for our 2017 Big Book Fair.

  • One of the team will be in the Veranda from 10 am to 12 noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to show new volunteers what to do.
  • It is a very easy task and involves cleaning and sorting the books. There are detailed guidelines available on what to do.
  • If you would prefer another time we will arrange a mutual time that suits you and one of the team to be there to show new volunteers what to do.
