Woden Valley Festival ‘The Carnival’ – Sat 9 Nov 2013
 
‘The Carnival’ – the main event of the Woden Valley Festival – a great family day of all things fun! Markets, entertainment, food, animals and lots of activities for all.  Woden Seniors will have a market stall selling books, plants and craft items co-located with Capital Health who will be providing Chinese Massage amongst other things.

Advance Care Planning – Information Session by ACT Health – Thurs 14 Nov 2013
 
If you become seriously ill or had a serious accident, and were not going to return to normal, what sort of medical treatment would you want?
Who would you want to make the decision for you about your medical treatment?
ACT Health need to know your choices for your future health care to be able to respect them.
This important iinformation ssession covers:
• What is Advance Care Planning?
• How to complete an Advance Care Plan and Enduring Power of Attorney
Morning tea will be provided.

Club Concert
A great afternoon was had by those attending the Club concert last Sunday.  Many thanks to the Woden Seniors Singers, Dante Musica Choir, the Two Annes and special guest performers Rachel Duncan and Michael Politi who both gave very generous performances of popular songs.
 
Melbourne Cup
A small but enthusiastic group gathered to watch the Melbourne Cup last Tuesday.  Many thanks to Tony MacDonald for organising the sweeps.

Christmas Lunch – Monday 9 December, 12:00 for 12:30pm
The Special Events sub-Committee is hosting a 2 course traditional Christmas lunch in the Club on Monday 9 December.  Our patron, his excellency, Michael Bryce will be attending and the Chordsmen will sing a few tunes.  More information coming.
 
Club Closing Time for Christmas & New Year period
 
The Club will be closed for the Christmas and New Year period from 4pm Friday 20 December 2013, re-opening at 9am on Monday 13 January 2014.
 
Friday Talk – Safety in modern cars
Friday 15 Nov 10-12AM
There have been amazing improvements in car safety in recent years. If you want to know in simple, non-technical terms what these do to make our journeys safer come along. Grahame is giving the talk for people who know nothing about cars except how to open the door and get in! 
 
Tip for the Week
Now that summer is approaching (perhaps) don’t forget the sunscreen and sunhat (and don’t be put off by concerns about nano-particles or other fears – the benefits of sunscreen far out way any possible, unproven, issues.) Otherwise you may finish up looking like the editor!

The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 14 October 2013 at 1pm.  A light lunch will be provided at 12noon.  Notices of the meeting have been posted in the Club.  
 
Notice of proposed amendments to the Club’s constitution has also been posted in the Club.  These relate to clarifying the role of Public Officer, providing the ability for the Club to confer life membership and amending the timeframe for holding Annual General Meetings to align with the Associations Incorporation Act.
 
Please come along, we need at least 40 members to create a quorum.

WiFi Now Available in Club!
Members can now access the internet on smart phones or tablets while at the Club – yes the Club is now an internet café! The password can be picked up at the office counter. Members can, of course, still use the computers in the training room if there isn’t a course in progress. Read More

Soup Kitchen
The winter Soup Kitchen finished this week.  Thanks to all those who helped by making soup and bread, and to those who came along on Wednesdays and Thursdays to share a meal.  The Kitchen raised over $2,000 over the three months.  A great effort and a lovely atmosphere during lunches.
 
Health Seminar – 10am – 12 noon, Thursday 12 September
Dr Hai Song Wang from The Capital Health Centre of Traditional Chinese Medicine will be speaking about how Chinese medicine can improve your health in Spring.

MAXIMISING YOUR INCOME – An information session for women over 60
 
The ACT Women’s Information and Referral Centre is offering a financial information session for women over 60 years of age to provide practical skills in controlling money with flexibility.
 
We all know it is not how much money we receive or earn, but it is what we do with our money that counts. This is a practical session that involves personalised activities enabling attendees to feel less stressed and spend less.
 
Session topics will cover:
* Goal setting
* The use of a flexible and easy budgeting tool
* Basic wealth check up
 
Attendees are requested to consider their weekly budget prior to attending.

Soup Kitchen
Don’t forget home made soup with sourdough bread is available for lunch in the Club or to take home for later for just $5 on Wednesdays and Thursdays until the end of August.
 
Silver Screen Film Festival
The Silver Screen Film Festival is a special Canberra centenary event presented by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and the ACT Office of the Ageing.
 
The Festival features an inspirational and diverse selection of contemporary and classic feature films, documentaries and short films from Australia and around the world.
 
The Festival will screen films at Tuesday morning matinee sessions until Tuesday the 27th of August and there will be some additional sessions on some Saturdays between 2 and 4pm.
 
Tickets are available from the National Film and Sound Archive or by phoning 6248 2000.  There are Festival programs in the Club foyer. Read More

Lex teaches Polymer Clay Sculpting, Polymer Canes/Beads, Air-Dry Clay Sculpting, Paverpol Garden Sculpture and Precious Metal Clay Silver.

News Update

Information Session

The next information session will be on July 5 in Hall 2 from 10.00am to 12noon. This free information session will include:

• a presentation from one of our members, Ms Maureen Hoyland about living at Bellerive retirement village in Lyons
• ACAT talking about the assessment process for home care or nursing home care, and
• Woden Community Services will talk about the services they provide to older Australians.

A light lunch of soup and bread will be available for $5.00 at 12noon.

Cognitively Stimulating Activities

If you are looking for a cognitively stimulating activity to add to your healthy ageing regime, why not try playing Bridge. There are 3 Bridge sessions each week in the Club that cater for all skill levels. And Margaret Kennedy provides regular lessons on how to play Bridge.

Perhaps playing Solo or Mahjong appeals, both are played in the club each week in a very relaxed social setting in the Anne Murray Room. Read More
