Club Closing Times for the Festive Season

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the Club through the year and wish you a happy and safe festive season. The Club will close at 4pm on Wednesday 21 December 2016 and reopen on Monday 16 January 2017. Activity groups can continue to use the Club through this period by arrangement with the front office.

Queen of Curtin crowned

Congratulations to our long-term member and supporter of the Club, Viola Kalokerinos, who has been crowned the Queen of Curtin. Viola was being recognized for her extensive service to the Curtin community at recent the launch of the book, Curtin turns 50, the story of a Canberra Suburb 1964-2014.

Bridge Beginner Lessons

Cathy Padovan, sometimes assisted by me, will be offering Bridge lessons for new players in the New Year commencing on Monday 30 January 2017 from 1.30 – 3.30 pm and running through the school term. If you are interested in learning this fascinating game please let Polly know on 6282 2573.

Christmas Luncheon Party – 12.30pm Monday 5 December

The Christmas Luncheon Party is on Monday 5 December 2016, at 12.30pm. Catering is by the Olive restaurant and will include dips with home made bread, yummy turkey rolls and roasted vegetables, Christmas pudding or fruit salad and wine.

We will have a special singer, Tony Haley, who will serenade us with Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra songs. Tony’s current passion is giving great songs a new lease of life with his own interpretation and feel.

Cost is $50 per person, please book and pay at the front counter by 28 November 2016 and let Polly know if you want to be seated with anyone in particular.

Canberra Seniors Club celebrates 50 years – 4pm, 3 December

The Canberra Seniors Club is celebrating their 50th anniversary on Saturday 3 December 2016, 4pm to 7pm in The Speedwell Room, The Dickson Tradies. Cocktail food and drinks will be served. R.S.V.P essential by 21 November on 6248 9509.

Defibrillator – How to use it

The Club has purchased a defibrillator which will be installed in the Foyer. St John Ambulance is offering training on how to use it for up to 10 people. If you are interested in learning how to use it and willing to in an emergency, please let Polly know.

National Shingles Vaccination Program

The Hon Susan Ley, Federal Minister for Health, launched the National Shingles Vaccination Program in our Club last Wednesday morning with the gentle exercise group. The Program provides free vaccine against Shingles for 70 year olds and a 5 year catch up program for those aged 71 – 79. The aim of the Program is to reduce the incidence of Shingles and its associated sequelae. Speak to your regular physician if you are interested in participating in the Program.

Friday Talk, 11am – 12:30pm Friday 28 October

Streaming music, films, TV, etc. over the internet to our phones, computers or TV.

Grahame Hellyer will be back to provide some advice on phones/tablets and the internet.

There are ever increasing ways to get your music, films, TV shows over the internet. Many of them are free.

Grahame will demonstrate a number of them in the Ann Murray Room. Free for Club members.

Spring time, a good time to clean out those dusty bookshelves! We are seeking donations of books, games, DVDs, vinyl, CDs, postcards, and jigsaw puzzles for our 2017 Big Book Fair.

Melbourne Cup

It’s that time of year!

Our Melbourne Cup Party will be held as usual on Tuesday 1st November 2016, commencing at 1.30 pm.

Members and friends are invited to attend the Melbourne Cup afternoon. We will provide some drinks, please bring some food to share. We will have a sweep or two of course.

Learn to Dance

Social dance lessons are available at the Club on Tuesdays from 2pm to 3:30pm in Hall 2 with Ian and Carla. The lessons cover ballroom (foxtrot, waltz, quickstep), Latin (rumba, cha-cha, jive). They are suitable for beginners up to intermediate. No partners required and there is no charge other than the normal Club activity fee. All welcome.

New Vogue Dancing is available in Hall 1 on Tuesdays from 1pm to 3.30pm, if you enjoy listening to pleasant music while exercising why not join them. Tuition is available from 11am to 1pm, it is not just for beginners, it is a shared time for learning, revising and rehearsing dances.

The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 12noon on Monday 19 September in Hall 1. A light lunch will be provided after the meeting. Please consider coming along.

The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 12noon on Monday 19 September, more information will be posted in the Club.

The 3rd Big Book Fair

The Book Fair is over for another year, we raised in excess of $14,000 over the three days of the Fair.

The Big Book Fair organising committee, Judy Bartlett, Judy Henderson, Anne Murray and Paul McGlew, would like to thank all those who helped with the Book Fair. People helped in so many ways – many gave a few hours each week over the last few months to sort, clean and pack books. Others helped with setting up, welcoming customers, restocking boxes during the three days of the Book Fair, and packing up. Then there were those who served and provided the delicious food for the morning and afternoon teas and the cakes for the cake stall.

It was a fantastic team effort with people pitching in from so many activity groups such as the Wednesday Exercise Group, the Table Tennis players, the Recorder Orchestra, the Dancing Class, the Bridge players, the Choir, the Art group, the Mah Jong group and so on. As well as members there were some ‘outsiders’ who did a wonderful job too such as Rohan Cumpston, Sarah Cumpston and Mark Sheen on the checkout and Judy B’s grandsons Luke, Simon and their friend Nathan who helped pack up and move tables.

All your help was much appreciated.

The Third BIG Book Fair is on now. Drop in for a browse and a cuppa over the week end. The dates and times are:

Saturday 13 August 10 am to 4 pm

Sunday 14 August 10 am to 4 pm.

Tuesday Bridge

Due to a number of absences there will be no Tuesday morning Bridge sessions during August. Thursday and Saturday Bridge sessions will continue as usual.
