Seniors Concert Success

There was a good turnout for the Club’s Seniors Concert last Sunday afternoon. The many performers from the Recorder Ensemble, Woden Senior Singers and the dancers entertained with a wide range of music.

Many thanks to Gail Guiliano for organising the event. Gail, Secretary of the Club and leader of the Woden Singers does so much for the club, especially to give us such an enjoyable afternoon. Her “No-one Loves a Fairy over 40” brought the house down once again. The Woden Singers sang a range of songs we all knew and enjoyed, with solos, quartets and even singing with Ian and Carla as they danced “Cheek to Cheek.”

Thanks too, to Margaret Wright for gathering many members of her ensemble to provide us with music through the ages. I heard many humming along with many well -known folk songs. And thanks to Lutana who once again compered the afternoon with stories and anecdotes.

There were many donations to the fund for farmers suffering from the drought and over $160.00 in gold coin donations will also go to the fund. To all those who brought food for the afternoon tea, your offerings of such delicious food were an appetising end to a most enjoyable afternoon.

Melbourne Cup

It’s that time of year!

Our Melbourne Cup Party will be held on Tuesday 6th November 2018 commencing at 1.30 pm. Members and friends are invited to attend. We will provide some drinks. Please bring finger food to share. We will have a sweep or two. It would be great if you could wear a Melbourne Cup hat.

Woden Seniors Concert – 2pm Sunday 21 October

Yes, it is on again, the Woden Seniors Concert, featuring singing, dancing and the playing of various instruments by Club members. The very entertaining Lutana McLeod is your MC. The concert starts at 2 pm and will include afternoon tea.

Donations of non-perishable food for Drought Stricken Farmers

We have a box in the Club foyer for donations of non-perishable food for distribution to drought stricken farmers in New South Wales.

Bridge Classes – all levels

Classes recommence on Monday 15th October at 1.30 pm.

Garden

The Club has applied for a grant for 2 raised garden beds in which to plant various herbs and greens. We are planning to form a Garden Activity Group to install and maintain these self watering beds. We also want to improve the surrounds of the club by designing & developing and planting out areas around the club. Annual General Meeting

A well-attended Annual General Meeting was held on Monday 17 September. The following members were elected to the Management Committee.

Bridge Classes – all levels

No Bridge classes for 1st & 8th October.

Classes recommence on Monday 15th October at 1.30 pm.

Garden

The Club has applied for a grant for 2 raised garden beds in which to plant various herbs and greens. We are planning to form a Garden Activity Group to install and maintain these self watering beds. 2019 Book Fair

We are still looking for someone to be the Container Manager. This would involve being responsible for moving packed boxes to the container on a regular basis, keeping track of what is put in the container, organising the boxes in the container and emptying the container in preparation for the next Book Fair. The manager will obviously need some help. If you would like to take on the role as either the manager or a helper please let Polly know.’

2019 Book Fair

Following the success of this year’s Book Fair it has been decided to hold one in 2019. It will be the second weekend in August namely on 9, 10 and 11 August 2019. The Book Fair has become bigger than anticipated and we now need some additional help. There are two areas where help is being sought at present.

1. Container Manager

This would involve being responsible for moving packed boxes to the container on a regular basis, keeping track of what is put in the container, organising the boxes in the container and emptying the container in preparation for the next Book Fair. The manager will obviously need some help. If you would like to take on the role as either the manager or a helper please let Polly know.

2. Identification of collectable and old books

From time to time we are not sure which of the books we receive in donations fit the category of ‘collectable’ or ‘old’. If there is someone among the membership who can help with this task please let us know – leave your details with Polly.

Book Fair

The BIG Book Fair held last weekend was a resounding success which raised $24,500 for the Club.

We had a huge amount of books to sell and as expected there was plenty left over. Most of the leftovers have gone to Lifeline, who were very happy to collect them. Some have gone to the Uniting Church Yarralumla book stall.

Left over magazines are available for Members to take for free. You may like to give them to friends, family, or organisations e.g. medical centres – whoever may appreciate them. They are on the bench in hall 2 – so have a look and take any you like.

The success of such an event depends on the support of a large number of members. The whole Club, as a self-funded organisation, benefits from the Book Fair.

Special thanks go to:

• The fantastic members of the teams that spent many hours every week over the last year cleaning, sorting and packing books. These teams led by Judy Bartlett, Margaret Bourke and Chris Mackay and including Jocelyn and Agatha operated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and were responsible for the high quality of the books offered.
• Sue Allen and her team in the Coffee Shop.
• Those who donated the delicious food for the Coffee Shop.
• The welcome team led by Jennifer Pratten who collected the entry donations and handed out information.
• Don Puttick and his helpers on the Checkout.
• Chris Mackay who managed Hall 1 and all her helpers.
• Linda Elford who managed Hall 2 and all her helpers.
• Judy Bartlett for managing the Anne Murray Room.
• Des Davies and the table tennis group for helping move boxes of books from the container while waiting for their game.
• The group of men (Tony, Don, Allan, Tyrone and Paul) who picked up and returned the tables.
• The men who installed the roadside signs.
• Mark Sheen for the massive task of emptying the container, reorganising it, and refilling it.
• The Marist students and their teacher Tony Sullivan who helped pack up
• Margaret Bourke and several other members of the Cumpston family who have been heavily involved for the five Book Fairs so far, including one from interstate.
• The members who helped set up, fill tables during the event and pack up.
• Ann Baker and the WOWs (Watercolours on Wednesdays group) for the beautiful cards, bookmarks and display of paintings.
• The family of members who ‘voluntold’ or were cajoled into helping.
• Polly for all her assistance.
• Judy Henderson for the publicity and organisation.
• Paul McGlew for strong guidance and the heavy lifting.
• Activity groups for putting up with the disruption just before and after the event.
• The generous community that donated books, and
• Last but not least all who came and bought the books and paintings.

The BIG Book Fair is only one week away so keep publicising it among friends, family and acquaintances.

Donations of Food for the Coffee Shop

We will be serving the following foods over the 3 days of the Book Fair Any donations of food will be gratefully received.

• soup & bread
• sandwiches
• slices, biscuits & cakes

Please make sure all donations are NUT FREE.

Please DO NOT provide food that contains cream, cream cheese, custard as filling or toppings.

Please write a list of ingredients for each donation.

Polly will have forms for you to indicate days & types of food you are donating.

• Filling the tables during the Book Fair
• Packing up

BIG Book Fair – time to get serious!!

The BIG Book Fair is only five weeks away so it is time to get serious about distributing posters and bookmarks and telling your friends and families.

• Polly has hundreds of posters for distribution so pick up some soon and put them on poster silos (the big concrete structure outside at many shopping centres), notice boards or in the windows of friendly shop keepers.

• Take some bookmarks to hand out to members of groups you attend, or to leave for people to pick up in prominent places, or put in letterboxes.

Watch this space in the next Fortnightly News for details about the ways you can help, before, during and at the end of the Book Fair. We will need a range of volunteers to empty the container and move boxes, to help in the kitchen, to work on the front desk, to keep the book tables in order, to work on the checkout, and to pack up at the end.

Many thanks to those club members that clean up after using cups and glasses in the three rooms. Thanks too to those members who take tea towels and other things home to wash. This willingness to clean up after each group means the club stays clean and welcoming to all.

Survey – healthy ageing

Nutrition Australia ACT is seeking input to develop a new healthy ageing program. They are conducting an anonymous survey of people over 45 to inform this program. Please help by completing a survey.
