Book Fair – 9, 10 and 11 August 2019
With only two months to go it is time to start getting the message out about our fantastic book fair.
Members can help by:
- Handing out bookmarks to family, friends and groups you are involved in. (Supplies of bookmarks are at the counter).
- Providing the information for local newsletters eg church, schools etc.
- Asking a friendly shopkeeper, hairdresser, café etc to put up a poster. (Posters will be available from Polly soon).
- Share the Facebook page www.facebook.com/wodenseniors.
If you are planning to donate books, DVDs, CDs, games and puzzles, please do it sooner rather than later to enable time for cleaning, sorting and categorising.
Simple & Healthy Eats for Seniors
This is a healthy eating workshop facilitated by an Accredited Practising Dietitian.
Learn how to make simple, nutritious recipes that require minimal preparation and finish with a group lunch featuring recipes prepared on the day.
When: Thursday 4 July 2019, 11:30am-1:00pm
Where: Community Room, Chifley Health & Wellbeing Hub

The Vegie Garden
Thanks to all those willing workers who built the wonderful vegepods. There some herbs and vegies planted. Feel free to take some leaves for your dinner. Polly has bags for you to carry your produce home. More will be planted shortly.
The gardeners meet most Fridays and plan to work on the remainder of the club surrounds. If interested in helping please leave your name with Polly.
New Bus Timetables
The new bus timetable books for each area are available from the library, you just have to ask. Polly has a copy for reference only.
Bridge Classes – all levels
Classes for all levels (including Beginners) have resumed after a few weeks break. Mondays at 1.30 pm.
The Woden Experiment
If you have noticed the “Woden Experiment” – in the square at Woden, we have been asked to tell you that any groups who wish to use this space, may take up the opportunity to do this.
Possible activities could be:
- Craft workshops
- Fitness, choir, dance demonstrations
If any members or groups at the club are interested please contact Polly and she will give you the relevant details. Otherwise just enjoy the space to meet and chat.
Damaged floorboards in hall 2
There will be a new floor laid over the existing floor in hall 2 in the first few weeks of July. There will be some disruption to activities in Hall 2 during this period so please bear with us.
Expression of interest – Carpet Bowls
We are going to restart Carpet Bowles in the Club after the floor in Hall 2 has been repaired, date and time to be confirmed. Let Polly know if you are interested in playing and we will keep you informed.
CARERS ACT
CARERS ACT will have representatives in the Club each Monday from 9.30 – noon. They are here to help our members with My Aged Care Referral especially in reference to Social Support Referrals. Members can attend club activities (still paying the Activity Fee) and possibly get transport arranged to attend these activities.
As part of this partnership with CARERS ACT any members who have a Social Support Referral and attend any activities at the club, the Government will subsidize the club at $15 an hour to support all we do here. You can talk to these representatives in the Anne Murray Room and they will help you through My Aged Care Referral and explain all the various support that is offered.
The representatives are Susanne and Gordana and at various times Tracey. Please feel free to come and speak to them any Monday from 9.30 – 12.00. They are also willing to help people who are caring for others and need to find out about services or help with paperwork, and online support.
Justice of the Peace
You will find Maureen in Club on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 11.00 am and 3 pm for Justice of the Peace matters.
SPIRAL PROGRAM – meets at the Uniting Church, Curtin
Spiral meets at the Uniting Church in Gillies Street, Curtin on Thursday mornings. Please arrive at or before 10.00. Speakers/ performers will commence at 10.10 and most will join us for the morning tea which will follow. A $1 contribution to costs is requested.
June 13 Sarah Kirkpatrick Karinya House
Karinya House is a local community-based organisation which has been supporting pregnant or early parenting women in crisis for 20 years. They operate on a twenty-four hour, seven days a week basis, providing professional and specialised support to women. Sarah will share some of the stories of the Women of Karinya. These narratives show the courage, resilience, learned knowledge and wisdom that she witnesses every day.
June 20 Joanna Gilmour Carte-o-mania!
Jo has been with the National Portrait Gallery since 2008 and has been a Spiral guest speaker a few times in the past. Today she will talk about the NPG’s collection of cartes de visite, Carte-o-mania! The exhibition celebrates the wit, style and substance of the pocket-sized portraits that were taken and collected like crazy in post-goldrush Australia.
June 27 Derek Whitcombe ‘Changes in Canberra Real Estate since 1977, how it looks today and what might the future hold’
Derek has a deep knowledge of Canberra real estate and has many tales to tell.
July 4 Rachael Duncan
Rachael has joined us twice before, sharing stories of her globetrotting life as an opera singer. Today’s visit will cover a broader part of the musical spectrum and will feature songs and arias from opera, operetta and musical theatre with classical favourites like Summertime from Porgy and Bess and Can’t help lovin’ dat man of mine from Show Boat.

August 22 Margaret Wright OAM with the Canberra Recorder Orchestra (U3A)
Margaret has been teaching recorders for most of her adult life. Ignore the bad press, don’t roll your eyes – come along to hear how this flute from the Baroque era has transitioned to the recent world-wide phenomenon of recorder orchestras.
There are ten sizes of recorders, from a tiny garklein to the rare giant deep sub-contra- bass. The Canberra Recorder Orchestra is unique in that all members are seniors, and they play all ten sizes. The sound of the full orchestra will be a pleasant surprise for anyone who has never heard one before.
We are people from varied backgrounds, occupations and origins. Mostly retired, ages range from 60 to 90+and there is no religious nature to our meetings. You are guaranteed a warm welcome.
