Keeping up with the Modern World
Those members who found Grahame Hellyer’s talks on digital stuff like phones useful, or attended his U3A classes and, of course, those who couldn’t attend them, may find his blog useful. The blog, a series of short articles on the internet, is designed to help seniors keep up with the changing times (not to suggest that you need lots of gadgets!) It also includes articles on Grahame’s hobby horses like keeping our brains active through things like music and learning languages.
The blog is at http://thedigitalaged.org/ . The blog has being going, sometimes intermittently, for two years, so, if reading the older entries, just bear in mind that technology is changing pretty quickly.

Spiral Program – 2016
THE SPIRAL STORY
Spiral is now in its 47th year of supporting/ entertaining some of Canberra’s senior citizens. Our ‘members’ range between about 60 and 95. We meet at the St. James Uniting Church in Curtin each Thursday from 10.00 am till midday. Some people get themselves there but we can sometimes offer a pick up (and deliver) service to people in inner south Canberra.
The Spiral Photo Album gives a good sense of who we are and what we do – true to the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.
We offer morning tea/ coffee with homemade cakes/ biscuits/ sandwiches followed by some form of entertainment. Usually this is a guest speaker, sometimes a musical performance and occasionally we go for a picnic or a bus trip. The Church generously supports us by providing the hall at a nominal rental. We have no fees but we do charge 50 cents contribution to costs. We are non-denominational and we welcome people from a varied background of occupations and origins.
Location and time. The Uniting Church is the cream coloured hall opposite the Curtin shops (the other side of the pedestrian crossing). It is best approached from the car park off Gillies Street. We arrive at 10.00. Morning tea is served between 10.10 and 10.45. While the washing up is done we remove tables and reconfigure the venue for the guest speaker who starts at about 11.00. Our aim is to be finished by midday.
For more information contact Brett Yeats (committee member) on Phone: 02 6281 7684 or at yeatsb.
2016 Program
May 5 Past Imperfect
Past Imperfect is a 13 minute award-winning short story filmed entirely at St Andrews village in Hughes with an all Canberra cast. Writer/ producer Georgina Jenkins and leading actress Margie Sainsbury will introduce the film and then we can have a Q&A afterwards. It is a particularly moving and appropriate story for Spiral. Please note that the film will screen first and morning tea will follow.
May 12 URoC
The wonderful Ukulele Republic of Canberra will return to entertain us fresh from another successful run at the National Folk Festival. Again, morning tea will follow the performance which I hope will commence at about 10.15.
May 19 To be advised
May 26 RMC Band members and their Tattoo experience
Five members from Duntroon were among the 1200 people from all around the world who played in the Edinburgh Tattoo as it travelled around Australia in January. They will join us for a combination of music and conversation. Here are some photos from the performance that my mother and I attended.
Justice of the Peace
You will find Maureen in Club on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 10.30am and 2pm for Justice of the Peace matters.
