Annual General Meeting
It is that time of the year again, the Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 12 noon on Monday 21 September 2015 in Hall 1. A light lunch of sandwiches, cakes and tea/coffee will be provided after the meeting. Please consider coming along to the meeting.
Vale – Richard Hickman
Richard Hickman passed away on 7 September after a long illness. Richard was an active member of the Club and a thoughtful member of the Management Committee. Richard crafted the recent changes to the Club’s constitution. We will miss his friendship and wise counsel.
2015-16 Participation (Seniors) Grants Program
The ACT Government, through this grant program provides non-recurrent project funding for activities and events that promote positive ageing in the ACT. The aim is to support older Canberrans to maintain their well being and to remain active in their community.
The Club has been successful in obtaining funding in previous years and is seeking advice from members on possible projects to pursue in this round. Maximum funding per applicant is $10,000 although $3-4,000 is a more realistic sum. Applications close on 5 October 2015.
The priority area most relevant to the Club is ‘3.1 Social Inclusion of Seniors’. That is, projects that assist Canberra’s Seniors to participate in the broader community including projects that enhance community relations in the Seniors arena that encourage whole of community engagement with Seniors.
The category most relevant to the Club is ‘4.3 Respect and Social Inclusion’. Projects that support Seniors to feel respected and valued and experience the ACT as a safe place to live and visit.
Projects that will be considered under this category for funding will support:
1. Initiatives that bring the generations together to reinforce respect for seniors and reduce social isolation;
2. Connect Seniors with expert advice surrounding health and well being to assist physical, recreational and nutritional needs;
3. Initiatives that encourage identification of and responses to elder abuse;
4. Develop and promote activities that assist isolated Seniors to connect with support networks and activities and encourage participation.

Fete – Lyons Church of Christ
The Lyons Church of Christ fete is on Saturday 26 September 2015 from 10am to 2pm. There will be plenty of activities including: Face Painting, Craft, Chinese food, Sausage Sizzle, Coffee Van, Cakes, Henna hands, Books, Cards, Paint your own ceramics, White Elephant and lots more!

Spiral Program Update
Spiral meet at 10am to mid day each Thursday morning for a cuppa and a talk at St James Uniting Church, Curtin.
24 September Tulip Top Gardens
Spiral has booked a bus to take us to these gardens rated by many as “better than Floriade”.
Acres of stunning world class gardens, including a watercourse and sensational waterfall – a natural landscape with 1000 blossom trees and hundreds of thousands of tulips all to be seen from the 70 metre high lookout. Subsidised cost of $10 per person which covers Tea/ coffee and a sausage sandwich. Be ready for the bus at 9.30.

Covenant Care in Canberra
Covenant Care aims to provide a service to people with a life limiting illness who are living at home, usually with the support of a spouse, partner or carer. Our focus is on care for our clients and on providing support for carers.
Covenant Care offers A Day With A Difference for people who have a life limiting illness and are living in their own home. It provides activities and entertainment by a skilled team in a warm and friendly environment. While clients are with us for the day their carer can have a break or catch up with personal or other business.
Covenant Care service is held at Jamison each Monday and at Curtin each Friday. Both centres are staffed by experienced palliative care nurses and strong teams of trained volunteers.
Our Day With A Difference is provided free of any charge thanks to ACT Health, the Southern Cross Club, the host parishes and the teams of volunteers and Palliative Care ACT. It is open to clients of any religion and to those with no religion.
