Career Check Up

CALLING ALL MATURE AGE WORKERS

You are cordially invited to have a FREE career check up at the inaugural “Career Check Up Expo for Mature Workers”

The “Career Check Up Expo for Mature Workers” is an initiative of IRT Foundation being delivered in partnership with the Australian Human Rights Commission and the ACT Government – the Expo will provide workers 45+ a one-stop-shop for planning their future and getting the right advice about working and retirement.

The Expo will put age-friendly employers, training organisations, career coaching, HR advisers, and financial planners all in direct contact with mature workers to break down the barriers to accessing information.

IRT Foundation’s Career Check Up Expo will assist mature workers to:

• identify potential career opportunities;

• find relevant and suitable training providers in the ACT; and

• link with potential employers and industry groups who support mature workers.

The Expo will be held on Wednesday, 29 June 2016, 10am – 2pm at the Ann Harding Conference Centre (Building 24) at the University of Canberra.

If you are a mature worker you are encouraged to register immediately for this exciting event by going online to www.irtfoundation.org.au and following the links to the Career Check Up Expo.

For specific information about the Expo contact the IRT on 1800 024 915.

Spiral Program – 2016

THE SPIRAL STORY

Spiral is now in its 47th year of supporting/ entertaining some of Canberra’s senior citizens. Our ‘members’ range between about 60 and 95. We meet at the St. James Uniting Church in Curtin each Thursday from 10.00 am till midday. Some people get themselves there but we can sometimes offer a pick up (and deliver) service to people in inner south Canberra.

The Spiral Photo Album gives a good sense of who we are and what we do – true to the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.

We offer morning tea/ coffee with homemade cakes/ biscuits/ sandwiches followed by some form of entertainment. Usually this is a guest speaker, sometimes a musical performance and occasionally we go for a picnic or a bus trip. The Church generously supports us by providing the hall at a nominal rental. We have no fees but we do charge 50 cents contribution to costs. We are non-denominational and we welcome people from a varied background of occupations and origins.

Location and time. The Uniting Church is the cream coloured hall opposite the Curtin shops (the other side of the pedestrian crossing). It is best approached from the car park off Gillies Street. We arrive at 10.00. Morning tea is served between 10.10 and 10.45. While the washing up is done we remove tables and reconfigure the venue for the guest speaker who starts at about 11.00. Our aim is to be finished by midday.

For more information contact Brett Yeats (committee member) on Phone: 02 6281 7684 or at yeatsb.

2016 Program

June 23 “To Petra by bicycle via the West Bank”

Ian and Cora Wallis entertained us last year with stories and photos from their month-long cycle trip around Vietnam and Cambodia. They return with more stories and more photos from a ride they did in Jordan in the mid-1990s.

June 30 Canberra Mandolin Orchestra

This lovely orchestra, formed in 2003, has performed at Spiral before (in May 2007), at Government House, Old Parliament House, National Portrait Gallery, twice at the National Folk Festival and at many other places. A treat for you.

July 7 To be advised

July 14 His Excellency Noel White

Mr White, the Ambassador of Ireland, took up his posting in January 2012. He will tell you about his illustrious and wide-ranging career, his work and experiences representing Ireland in that always delightful Irish brogue. A charming man with a lovely sense of humour.

Justice of the Peace

You will find Maureen in Club on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 10.30am and 2pm for Justice of the Peace matters.
